A Mudlarking Find Brings a World War I Soldier to Life

A mudlark is someone who looks through river mud to find interesting or valuable items. Through history, most mudlarks were poor and unskilled and searched through city sewage to make a living. The modern mudlark is more likely to use a metal detector for treasure hunting as a hobby. Nicola White was mudlarking and found a brass luggage tag with the name F. Jury on it, with an address. That was the beginning of the journey to find F. Jury.

Occasionally, a seemingly innocuous find in the River Thames such as this, can be compared to opening up a glorious story book. It is no secret that it is the hidden stories behind the items which I find washed out by the Thames tide, which fuel my passion for mudlarking.  With the help of a lot of people on twitter, (after I posted a picture of F. Jury's brass luggage tag last Thursday 27th August),  I was to find that this small, muddy object was to conjure up a whole family of people from the past, with their lives opening up before me like an intriguing novel.  These people and their very real dilemmas have lain forgotten for years (especially in this case, as there seems to be no living close relatives).  So here is a brief outline of the very worthy life of Frederick Jury, the owner of the luggage tag, discovered in the Thames mud on 27th August 2015 at Enderby Wharf Greenwich.

The luggage tag turned out to be older than he imagined. Frederick Jury was born in 1873. With help from strangers and historical records and resources, White uncovered his story. Not only is it a glimpse into the everyday lives of some turn-of-the-century British folk, but the account follows Jury through World War I and afterward. White even went to search for Jury’s gravesite. The story is not only fascinating, but well told. White makes us really care about one person, as well as his family, who lived and died so long ago. -via Metafilter

Previously Banned TV Show Episodes You Can Now Stream Online

Having an episode banned from airing is a fairly common phenomenon in the world of television, and as times change so do the reasons why episodes are yanked.

Usually it's the network censors who pull an episode, such as Fox's censors refusing to air the Family Guy episode "Partial Terms Of Endearment" because it features Lois deciding whether or not to have an abortion.

But sometimes the show's creators make the decision to pull the episode due to tragic events that have taken place around the time the episode was supposed to air.

Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller ran into this problem with episode 4, which featured Molly Shannon as a psycho who brainwashes kids into killing other kids.

The episode was set to air soon after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, so rather than risking the home audience "have a negative experience" while watching the show he opted to skip the episode.

We recently shared a mental_floss article from a few years ago featuring 27 temporarily banned TV episodes, and now they're back with a new collection of 26 Previously Banned TV Episodes You Can Stream Right Now that features a few repeats and a bunch of new entries worth checking out.

Elderly Woman with Dementia Warms to Her Great-Granddaughter

(Video Link)

Sophie Flynn, 5, met her great-grandmother for the first time. Her parents, Sarah Miller and William Flynn, were worried about the encounter. Their beloved grandmother has dementia and is easily startled by unfamiliar people. Would she become anxious or withdrawn around Sophie?

Not a bit! Sophie sat next to her great-grandmother and sang "You Are My Sunshine." As she did so, the woman turned to her and maintained a full smile, clearly enjoying the experience. Sarah Miller told The Mirror:

"Sophie brought her back to life. It was amazing, we just couldn't believe it. When they were together it was like they were the only two people in the room.

"Nana isn't very responsive, she doesn't know who I am or who my mum Yvonne, her daughter, is most of the time.

"She only remembers her husband Joe and he is the only one she talks to but straight away she started engaging with Sophie.

"Nana is very scared of new people but she was completely at ease with Sophie. She kept asking for Sophie for the two days we stayed in Norwich."

Your First Friend, Your Forgotten Friend

(Mark Pain/Pain Train)

When you first joined MySpace, you were anxious and awkward. You didn't know anyone. You didn't know if it would be safe space.

Immediately, Tom Anderson appeared. He was not only the co-founder of MySpace, but your very first friend on the network.

As other people appeared in your life, Tom fell into the background. You forgot about him, but he never forgot about you.

Don't wait until it's too late to rekindle that relationship.

R.I.P. Oliver Sacks

Acclaimed neurologist, author, and philosopher Oliver Sacks revealed earlier this year that he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The New York Times has announced his death this morning. Sacks wrote about neurological research in a way that the layman could not only understand, but that would spark deep thought into the meaning of mind and consciousness. He wrote about patients who displayed unusual abilities and disabilities of the brain, as in the book The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, and neurological research, such as his discovery of the effects of L-dopa on the brains of catatonic patients in Awakenings, which was made into the 1990 film starring Robin Williams as Sacks.

His intellectual curiosity took him even further. On his website, Dr. Sacks maintained a partial list of topics he had written about. It included aging, amnesia, color, deafness, dreams, ferns, Freud, hallucinations, neural Darwinism, phantom limbs, photography, pre-Columbian history, swimming and twins.

“I am very tenacious, for better or worse,” he wrote in “A Leg to Stand On.” “If my attention is engaged, I cannot disengage it. This may be a great strength, or weakness. It makes me an investigator. It makes me an obsessional.”

The Times has more on Sacks' extraordinary life and work. Sacks died of cancer Sunday morning at his home in New York. He was 82.

Guy Asks Internet To Remove Kid From Photo, Gets The Photoshops He Deserves

Everybody knows better than to ask the internet for help Photoshopping a picture by now, and we've seen the droll dorkiness that makes the rounds after these poor victims have asked "for help".

So it's agreed that those who ask “for help” from the internet are doing so knowing full well what lies in store for their image, right?

(Image Link)

Okay good, because I almost feel bad for the guy who asked the interwebs to remove the kid from the background of this romantic picture because people now think of him as a kid hating jerk!

Some of the 'shoppers were happy to help delete the kid from the pic by adding different kinds of dogs to the image

And then war suddenly broke out all around them...we salute you, Private Smoochface!

Kitten Pro Westling

Although it looks cute, I've long suspected that kitten wrestling is fake. The way that they paw at each other with no one getting seriously injured or gaining lasting advantage of the other . . . that's got to be scripted.

10-Year Old Gets Bitten by Shark, Escapes, Then Jumps Back into the Water to Rescue Another Child

(Photo: News 4 Jax)

10-year old Kaley Szarmack was swimming off Jacksonville Beach, Florida last Wednesday. A three-foot shark bit one of her legs--a wound that would eventually require 90 stitches. But Kaley didn't let that mere flesh wound distract her. After realizing that a 6-year old friend of the family was still in the water, she ran back out, grabbed the younger child, and pulled her in before the shark could get a bite from her, too. News 4 Jax quotes her father:

“I am just so proud of her. And so thankful that she is doing so well. You know, she's got no permanent damage that we know of at this point, and they said she is going to heal up. She'll be able to run, jump, swim and surf in not too long of healing time. Going to have a pretty big scar and quite a story to tell though,” Dave Szarmack said.

Dramatic Rescue of Kitten from Flooded Storm Drain

Here we have a newsworthy version of the classic moment when a bunch of women see a kitten and squeal with delight. They had a really good reason- this kitten’s life was saved from a storm drain full of rising water during a storm in Charleston, South Carolina. Dorella Tuckwiller of the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee went head first into the drain to pull the kitten out. Firefighter Galeena Wileman held a rope tied to Tuckwiller’s foot in case the attempt went bad.

(YouTube link)

There were three kittens in the drain when the storm began. The mother cat removed one, another kitten drowned, and the third was rescued. The rushing water was much worse before the video began. Firefighters and volunteers built a makeshift dam upstream from the drain to lower the water level for the rescue. The kitten, named Stormy, spent some time in an animal hospital and is now is doing well in a foster home. -via Laughing Squid

Happy Tenth Blogiversary to Our Own Miss Cellania

She's been a mom, a radio disc jockey, a soldier of fortune, and a writer. She's our own Miss Cellania, the managing editor of Neatorama for the past 5 years.

Today, she's been blogging for 10 solid years at her internet home base of operations.

I've never met her in person, or even spoken with her on the phone. But I feel like I know her. She's easy to get along with and work with. And despite the sheer physical distance between the Neatorama authors scattered across the country, she brings us together with her resolute professionalism and good humor.

Head on over to Miss Cellania's home blog and wish her a fine 10th anniversary celebration.

The Best Books Assigned in High School

Ernest Hemmingway is a great author, one of the handful of writers commonly assigned to high schoolers that I actually enjoyed reading. I'm sure many of you other heavy readers feel the same -books are great, but assigned reading isn't always so good. That's why I love this great list of the best books assigned in high school. I personally would add Catcher in the Rye, but as all these things are subjective, I know not everyone agrees. That's why I'm curious to know what you guys think -what's the best book you were assigned to read in high school?

The Only Known Surviving Footage of the Titanic

YouTube Link

This footage from the A.P. archive begins with the R.M.S. Titanic moored in Belfast Lough prior to leaving for Southampton. The Titanic is shown at sea where icebergs abound, and there is a shot of Captain Smith on the bridge pre-disaster. The remaining minutes show shots from before and after the tragedy in fascinating stages. The Carpathia is shown at sea with rescued passengers on board, there are various closeups of rescued crew and passengers on land, the families of the passengers are seen lined up outside the cruise line's office to hear word about their loved ones who were aboard the Titanic, and more.
