Rock-A-Bye Baby In Wolf Song

(Video Link)

Apparently, this wolf is pretty damned concerned about the happiness of this baby. In fact, whenever she starts crying, the pup starts singing to help calm her down.

Rainbow Cheesecake

It's like eating a piece of the sky after a rain shower. Yoite7, an artist in Italy, baked this lovely cheesecake. How would you make it?

Churro Ice Cream Sandwiches

(Photo: Los Angeles Magazine)

It's hard to improve upon the magnificence of the ice cream sandwich, but chefs in Los Angeles have done just that. At the Churro Borough, you can eat ice cream sandwiches made between pieces of fresh churro:

Imagine this: warm, freshly fried, spiral-shaped churros the size of cookies—but thicker, like a small donut—holding, ever-so-gently, a creamy scoop of caramel peach ice cream. The churro is fluffy yet crisp, with a thick layer of cinnamon sugar clinging to its delicate surface. The ice cream, made from a custard base, leaves nothing to the imagination. It's rich and cool and just what you've been waiting for all week long.

These Pups Can't Wait to Take A Bath

(Video Link)

I have to bribe my pooch with food to get in the bath tub during bath time and even then, he tries to get out the second I turn my back, but these little dachshund pups jump at the chance to take a bath -quite literally.

Hamster Dress Up

The blogger at Mythillogical- Myths & Fabrications said her daughter wanted to dress up her hamster in doll clothes. Mom had a better idea. The trick to getting pets to cooperate is to turn such an activity into something the pet wants to do -like explore holes in a box. With a camera ready, the hamster (named David Bowie) did just that. See more pictures of different "costumes" at the Tumblr blog. Link -via Laughing Squid

The Debrett's Guide to Mobile Phone Etiquette

The Telegraph has published a 10-point guide to cell phone manners from Debrett's, the traditional authority on British aristocracy and social manners. The kinds of things you'd expect, like:

8. Step away from the phone at meal times

Don't put your phone on the dining table, or glance at it longingly mid-conversation.

9. Don't carry on mobile phone calls when in the middle of something else

Don't carry on mobile phone calls while transacting other business - in banks, shops, on buses and so on. It is insulting not to give people who are serving you your full attention.

Most of it is intuitive, meaning the people who will read it don't need to be told how to take calls or not in various situations. And as commenters at Metafilter quickly pointed out, the list is only about phone calls, which is inadequate in an age when young people use smart phones for much more, like texting, watching TV, web browsing, music, and social networking. If we were going to construct a comprehensive list of rules for using smartphones, what rules would you suggest? Link

Middle Class Problems

Human existence is bleak and miserable. Thankfully, you have Twitter as an outlet. The Twitter feed Middle Class Problems retweets tales of great woe. Luke Lewis of Buzzfeed helpfully illustrated them. You can find more at the link. Make sure that you have tissues handy.

Goat Anatomy

Makes perfect sense to me. It will also cause people to want their very own pet goat with its tum and jump sticks. Link

Well, Nuts Can Be Pretty Greasy

How is a squirrel supposed to keep his hands clean after a big picnic lunch? With a few napkins, of course. If only the birds could pick up this trick, they'd probably love to use it for nesting materials.

Vintage Labor Day Celebrations

Labor Day is an American holiday to celebrate working people and their contributions. It was born out of the organized labor movement, specifically the Pullman Strike in 1894. The original meaning of the holiday is often overlooked in the 21st century, but it used to be the main focus of Labor Day, as you can see in 16 vintage photos of the celebration at mental_floss. Shown here is a union float from a Labor Day parade in 1909, and a community barbecue from 1940. Link

Diana Nyad Completes Cuba Swim

World-record distance swimmer Diana Nyad first tried to swim from Cuba to the U.S. in 1978. It was not successful. Just a few minutes ago, at age 64, Nyad reached Key West, Florida, successfully completing the 103-mile swim in her fifth attempt. She swam for 52 hours and set a world record for a distance swim without a shark cage.

The Stairways to the Stars

As Los Angeles grew in the 1920s, in large part because of the film industry, city planners built hundreds of outdoor staircases into the hills to connect new homes with public transportation at the bottom. They aren't used much anymore, as residents are more dependent on cars.

The film studios were the first to develop the area, building compact bungalows to house their actors and technicians. Both Chaplin and Disney lived here.

Movie carpenters would build sets during the week and homes at the weekend. Charles said this accounted for the local architectural hotchpotch that is often ridiculed. A Moorish castle next to a Spanish villa, next to a Tudor mansion - the carpenters were inspired by whatever they had been building on the studio backlots that week.

Our second staircase was thankfully unobstructed. Here, in 1932, Laurel and Hardy tried and failed to move a piano to the top in The Music Box. The film won an Academy Award. I'd seen it over and again as a child and remembered it fondly.

There were now buildings either side but it was still quite recognisable. For such a historic landmark it was still remarkably unkempt, its history simply marked by a defaced granite plaque inset into one of the lower steps.

Take a tour of those staircases both then and now with Charles Fleming of the L.A. Times and Zeb Soanes of the BBC. Link -via Dark Roasted Blend

Can a Messy Desk Make You More Creative?

One of my favorite adages is "An uncluttered desk is the sign of an uncluttered mind." It appears to be true that a messy desk fosters creativity. Kathleen Vohs of the University of Minnesota cites three experiments in which a neat or messy setting influenced a person's thinking process. In one experiment, 48 subjects were placed in either a neat or a messy room, and told to come up with creative uses for ping pong balls.

Two assistants rated each idea on a one-to-three scale (from not at all creative to very creative). After adding the scores, the researchers found that those who worked in the messy room were more creative overall, and came up with more highly creative ideas, than those who performed the same task in the neat room. On average, those working in the pristine environment came up with as many suggestions as those in the messy one; their ideas just weren’t as innovative.

“Being creative is aided by breaking away from tradition, order and convention,” Vohs and her colleagues conclude, “and a disorderly environment seems to help people do just that.”

An interesting observation here is that the subjects did not select whether their experimental environment was neat or messy, so a person's natural messiness or creativity did not come into play. And a neat desk has its advantages, too. Vohs tells us of other experiments in which people working in a neater environment tended to be more generous and to select more nutritious foods afterward. Buttons The Beaver Is As Cute As A Button

Poor little Buttons was an orphan, but fortunately, Farasyn Farm’s Wildlife Rescue in Oregon rescued the little gal and will be taking care of her until she is old enough to return to the wild on her own. In the meanwhile, that means we get all kinds of great photos of this adorable little babe.

David Bowie the Dog Is As Fashionable as the Real Thing

David Bowie the dog was just introduced to Cute Overload and this is one fashionable pooch that certainly lives up to his name. In fact, I think David Bowie would be quite a Shibu Inu if he was a dog.
