Actually for short-term frost-bite protection, that's exactly what you want. You want warm core blood to circulate freely to extremities. It's not a good long term treatment because you will become hypothermic sooner than you would otherwise but for this situation it sounds like they did the right thing.
The remake of the Wicker Man was horrible and missed the point of the original which was actually rather interesting and was a statement about the counter culture of the time.
I'd recommend Insidious...the plot is pretty typical but somehow it manages to make your spine tingle anyway...
