Wonder Woman: A Short Film

(YouTube link)

Here we see Wonder Woman (played by Rileah Vanderbilt) being generally tough as nails, in both the modern world and in the mythological pantheon from which she originated. The idea of a Wonder Woman feature film has been talked about for years, with studios considering it, and deciding that it's too difficult, or won't draw enough fans. This short film by Rainfall Films gives the Amazonian the treatment the character deserves. It seems like a teaser for something more to come. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? Woman Wins Marathon by Accident

Meredith Fitzmaurice had never run a full marathon before. She was working her way up to that when she entered the half-marathon at the Run for Heroes Marathon in Amherstburg, Ontario, last Sunday. But the half-marathon and the full marathon were happening at the same time, and she missed a turn on the half-marathon course. Fitzmaurice just kept going with the other runners.

"I just run with my watch, so I was watching my time since I planned to do my half in under 1:28," she said. "I was doing the race as training for my first full marathon in Detroit. But I'm looking at the time and wondering where the finish line is."

Fitzmaurice, 34, asked one of the bike officials on the course where the turn was for the half-marathon, although she admits by that point she had her suspicions.

"Once I realized what I had done, I figured, well I'll just run 20 miles and use it as a long run and call it a day," she said.

But as she headed from the turnaround she started to count people ahead of her.

There were only a few men ahead, and no women, so Fitzmaurice kept running, and was the first woman across the finish line, and the tenth overall with a time of 3:11:48. Link -via Metafilter

The Highlight of the Phoenix Comic Con

I don't know that this version of Link would really be able to save Princess Zelda, but he sure could melt even the coldest heart with his cuteness. Of course, it's dangerous to go alone, so I'd like to take him.

Finding Vivian Maier

In 2007, photographer John Maloof went to an auction house across the street from his Chicago home and bought a box of undeveloped film that had been abandoned in a storage locker. When he developed the negatives, he discovered that they contained a photographic gold mine left by a mysterious woman named Vivian Maier.

Vivian Maier - completely unknown at the time - had left a body of work comprising of more than 2,000 rolls of film, 3,000 printed photographs and 150,000 negatives, representing the photos she took from the 40s through the 70s. She took candid pictures of people, street life, and buildings in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, the American Southwest, and places as fara way as Manila, Bangkok, Beijing, Egypt and Italy.

But who was Vivian Maier? Maloof spent years reconstructing her work and life - and when he finally found her identity, Vivian died only days before he could reach her.

But in death, the very private Vivian Maier (friends have likened her to Mary Poppins - Maier was a nanny) has found fame. Thanks to Maloof, her work has found new fans from published books and exhibitions across the United States - and finally, a documentary is in the works.

Wil Wheaton's Advice Inscribed in a High School Graduate's Yearbook

Anne Wheaton, the wife of celebrity geek and Star Trek: The Next Generation star Wil Wheaton, writes:

Wil was asked to sign the yearbook of a boy who just graduated from high school. He added a little extra something.

All of this is good advice to high school graduates. I would also suggest not attempting to perform a Kolvoord Starburst unless you're a master pilot.

LEGO X-Wing is the World's Largest LEGO Model

Forget the Force! The world's coolest Star Wars creation uses LEGO bricks and lots of it. The LEGO X-Wing is built with over 5 million bricks. It's the largest LEGO model ever built:

The model of the classic Star Wars fighter being unveiled in Times Square has a wingspan of 44 feet and comes complete with R2-D2 and a full range of sound effects. It’s a super-duper-sized version ofStar Wars Lego starfighter set #9493 and was made with 5,335,200 Lego bricks. That, according to Lego, makes it the largest model ever built, eclipsing the Lego robot at the Mall of America by some 2 million bricks. This replica of the Rebel Alliance dogfighter is 42 times the size of the Lego version we’ve all built and a bit bigger than a real X-Wing. (Yes, yes, we know they’re not real. Just go with it.) The X-Wing Luke Skywalker and his fellow rebels flew was about 41 feet long, 2 feet shorter than this Lego masterpiece.

The X-Wing was built at the Lego Model Shop at the company’s facility in Kladno, Czech Republic. It took 32 “master builders” (Note: This is a real job, and we’re preparing our resumés.) 17,336 man-hours to construct the X-Wing.

Tourist Rescued After Dining on Iceberg

Sunday afternoon, four American tourists in Iceland decided to picnic on an ice floe in the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon. But that was not a great idea, as they discovered when the ice they were sitting on started floating away!

According to Páll Sigurður Vignisson, member of the Hornafjörður rescue team and employee at Jökulsárlón, the tourists, who were from the United States, had set up a table and chairs on an ice floe with the plan of eating dinner when a gust of wind suddenly pushed the ice away from land, leaving them stranded about 10 meters from the shore.

One of the tourists managed to jump to shore before the ice drifted too far and called 112 for help. "When we arrived it was quite comical to see them sitting on chairs and with a table on an iceberg ... Yes the dinner was over," Páll told Iceland Review, adding that he had not noticed what they had been eating as he was too busy getting life vests to them.
