Why Is Poop Brown And Pee Yellow?

The title sounds like a question a five-year-old would ask, and most of us would reply with something like "I don't know," or "It has to be some color." But it's a valid question, and MinuteEarth has the answers, which give us an amazing glimpse into the complex chemistry of our bodies.

The main reason we don't have the answers for our kids is that the subject of bathroom functions was once not spoken of in polite society. Or even in school. But it's part of the way our bodies work, so the more we know, the better we can take control of our own health. -via Laughing Squid

The Fates of the Refugees of the St. Louis

In 1939, the St. Louis set sail from Hamburg, Germany, en route to Cuba. Aboard were 937 passengers seeking refuge from the Jewish persecution of Nazi Germany. They had hoped they could stay in Cuba until their applications for U.S. visas could be approved. But Cuba turned them away. And the U.S. wouldn't let them in.

The State Department sent a telegram to the ship stating: “[Passengers must] await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas before they may be admissible into the United States.”

With no further progress to be made, the ship sailed back to Europe. Four European nations, Great Britain, France, the Netherlands and Belgium, did agree to take the refugees when the ship returned to the continent. However, as the Nazis invaded western Europe over the following years, 532 of the former passengers found themselves in German-controlled territory. In the end, 254 were killed during the war and Holocaust.

A Twitter feed called St. Louis Manifest gives each of those 254 people their own memorial, naming each one, their fate, and a photograph if available, in separate Tweets. The Stein family shown above has three entries. Read the short version of the St. Louis refugees' story at Smithsonian.

Fun Facts You Might Not Know About Robin Williams

Robin Williams died over two years ago and for his fans, the world still doesn't seem quite back to normal. Even if you're a big fan of his films though, you might not be familiar with some of these fascinating facts over on TopTenz. For example, did you know a lot of his "gibberish" on Mork and Mindy was actually just cursing in another language until ABC caught on and hired a censor that spoke five different languages? Or that he once tried to buy a giant rubber penis while in costume as Mrs. Doubtfire?

You might be surprised by what you don't know about Robin Williams, so see the full list here.

7 Strange Mysteries of World War One

We study the big wars of history, but there will always be things we don't know due to the chaos, death, and destruction all wars bring. Records and witnesses are hard to come by even in recent wars, but World War I was 100 years ago. Things we don't know about the Great War will most likely forever be shrouded in mystery. One of the more shocking of these mysteries is the case of Béla Kiss.

Béla Kiss was a Hungarian tinsmith who marched off to war in 1914. He left his home in the care of his housekeeper, along with his collection of seven giant metal drums. Townsfolk knew that he had been collecting gasoline in anticipation of wartime rationing, and when gasoline was needed, they cracked open the drums. Instead of gasoline, they were met by the stench of death.

A search of Kiss’ property revealed 24 dead bodies, 23 women and a man, who had been strangled and pickled in alcohol. Further investigation uncovered a secret room and stacks of letters between Kiss and 74 different women. Police discovered that he had defrauded countless women and had even been taken to court. They issued an arrest warrant for Kiss. He was almost apprehended in a Serbian hospital in October of 1916, but escaped at the last minute.

From there, Kiss vanished. Rumours circulated about a French Foreign Legion soldier who used his alias (Hoffman) and boasted about strangling people). Another alleged sighting occurred in New York City. But Béla Kiss’ fate – and his story in general – remains one of the more sinister mysteries of World War One. It’s also likely that not all of his victims were found.

That's one mystery that may never be solved. There are others, some with a glimmer of hope, that you can read about at Urban Ghosts.

This Cat's Post-Rescue Transformation is Amazing

Sinbad the cat is a Persian kitty that belonged to an elderly man in Chicago. Unfortunately, as her owner got older, his mental health declined and the kitty's thick, long hair started matting as he neglected to brush her. When a city worker came to do some repairs and maintenance on the man's home, he noticed the cat's poor condition and called the The Anti-Cruelty Society, who sent an investigation team to check on the kitty. When the team arrived, they asked the man if he would be willing to give up Sinbad and he agreed.

At the shelter, vets bathed the cat and gave him two rounds of hair cuts -shedding over five pounds of hair from the cat. After he started to look better, shelter employee Elliot Serrano took Sinbad home over the holidays and ended up falling in love with the recovered and loving kitty. Serrano has since adopted Sinbad and the recovering cat is happy to live in a happy home.

You can keep up with Sinbad's exploits on his Facebook and Instagram.

This Cat Won't Leave His Owner's Grave

This pretty kitty lives right on top of a grave in Central Java. Naturally, it's not just any grave -it's the grave of his beloved owner, Kundari, who took the feline in when it was just a baby. He does leave the grave here and there -to visit the son of his owner to get cuddles and food, but while Kundari's son tried to adopt the cat, the little guy refused to stay at his home long and always left to go to the cemetery again. Since the pictures of this poor little babe came out, village locals now come visit the grave and give the kitty affection and food.

The Black Sabbath Born Again Demos That Totally Smoke The Album Versions

Heavy metal as we know it would not exist if not for Black Sabbath, because they set the standard for the horror movie theatrics, spooky hard rock sound and clothes worn by metal bands for decades to come.

Pretty much everyone agrees Sabbath was best when Ozzy was the lead singer, so when the band came back from the dead in 1983 with the album Born Again people didn't dig seeing former Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan at the helm.

But if they could have heard these unmixed demos shared on YouTube by THE SINISTER EXAGGERATOR they would have praised it like they should- because this blistering session of raw rock 'n' roll is so good it screams for itself!

Priorities

This is how I operate when I’ve got a feature article deadline looming. The more I think about it, the more I remember the email, the dishes, the garbage, the bill that needs to be paid, and the nap I really need. Comic artist Sarah Andersen knows she’s not the only one. If it weren't for the last minute, I'd never get anything done.

This Snake Loves His Sandbox

(Video Link)

Snakes get a bad rap what with being slithery and some of them being deadly and all, but that doesn't mean they can't be cute. If you aren't quite sure you can accept this as fact, you won't want to miss this precious video of a baby boa playing in his sandbox. Don't turn it off before the very end or you might miss the cutest part.

Snuggles

Looks like the doc has found the secret to happiness. He’ll probably get rich telling people what they should already know. Yeah, I would love to snuggle with all four of my cats at once, but each of them only gets along with two others, and those relationships aren’t completely reciprocal. I can sometimes get two of them at once, though, and that makes me happy. This is the latest from Lunarbaboon.

Tips from a Master

The following is an article from The Annals of Improbable Research, now in all-pdf form. Get a subscription now for only $25 a year!

by Alice Shirrell Kaswell, AIR staff

How can a researcher stay ahead of the pack? Here are some tips from David Lester, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (now Stockton University). Professor Lester has published nearly 2000 studies, books and other academic reports. His recent work is profiled elsewhere in an article from The Annals of Improbable Research. Much of his earlier work is listed pithily in the article “Way to Go, David Lester,” which appeared in AIR 10:2

In His Own Words
Professor Lester shared a few of his professional secrets in a long letter published March 9, 2004 in The Chronicle of Higher Education, under the headline:

Complain, Complain
A widely published scholar wonders why academics gripe so much about how hard they work

The letter was his response, he says, to “articles by faculty members who find the academic life too stressful—a point of view I find absurd.”

The letter is meant to educate. “I have made some decisions over the course of my career that have allowed me to be productive, yet not feel overwhelmed,” he confides. Here are some of Professor Lester’s insights:
