A great article! I have been through California City a number of times and often wondered about the nature of people. Why is it that zillions of people want to crowd into an area like Los Angeles where the traffic is horrendous and the dwellers have such short tempers because of all the stress?

The I think of Las Vegas... the drive between Los Angeles and Las Vegas is interesting. It takes a little over an hour to leave the hustle-and-bustle of the LA area to be driving on a road in the middle of the empty desert. The in the middle of nowhere are a couple of towns (Baker, Barstow) before nothing again. Then smack in the middle of the vacancy appears Las Vegas!

It's kinda the thoughts I have when I've been through California City. It's also kinda the thoughts I have when I'm the first patron into a movie theater to find my seat and then the other people come in and sit right next to me instead of sitting any other place in the empty theater.

Great article for thought!

This list should be called, "Random films that take place in these states". Why these movies? It seems like half are totally on the nose (Rocky for PA), while half have me scratching my head (Three Faces West for ND). There was no rhyme or reason behind the choices.

The articles that have surfaced about this latest "evidence" all seem to be advertisements for a program on the History Channel. That channel is not exactly the best source for historical accuracy. History Channel has aired such programs as: "Bigfoot Captured" (it wasn't). They have also run specials about hunting Hitler, finding the lost colony of Roanoke and finding Atlantis, the truth about Alcatraz, predictions of Nostradamus, and secrets of Einstein’s brain.
Carl Sagan was famous for the advice:“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.” One grainy photo found by someone intent on proving a claim is just as likely to be a case of pareidolia as it is outright fraud. They are claiming photo enhancements prove their claims. Ever been tricked by Photoshop? Supposedly, there is a barge being towed by the ship on the background. And in that barge is an object "precisely 38 feet long." Can you even see the barge clearly?
And none of the news stories that I have been able to locate have any independent corroboration. They are all using the upcoming History Channel program as their only source.

Light bulb lifetime drops really fast with higher filament temperature, but efficiency also goes up fast with temperature too as relatively less light is wasted on IR. Want a bulb to last a long time? Use a bulb below it's rated voltage, and get a rough service bulb if it is going to moved or be turned on and off a lot. But expect to spend more on the electricity than you would spend on bulbs. As electricity got more expensive, the sweet point between spending too much on electricity vs new bulbs meant making more efficient cheap bulbs that last shorter.

I got an old pair of "distance glasses" from an uncle. They worked quite well, made distant objects less fuzzy and signage easier to read. However, they're decades old, so maybe laws changed since then, making them illegal to sell? It's a shame, if so, because such basic optics are quite useful for people without any eye conditions, and of course a cheaper option for those with just slightly weaker than normal eyesight.
A search for "nearsighted glasses" on eBay turns up 4,000 results, many allow you to select strength from -1 to 10. As low as $2/each, you could easily buy an assortment of strengths and, like any optician, see which works best for each eye, then order the proper pair, perhaps in a more desirable style.

LOL. You don't HAVE to get new glasses every year, dude. No one is stopping you from sticking with the same pair for ten years, whether or not that's a good idea is up to you.

This is the kind of thing that gets people killed... Non-professionals offering bits of valid advice they've heard, mixed in with incorrect/bad advice, and missing some of the most important safety notes and disclaimers any medical professional would know to always include.

It's a tricky situation... Countries can't allow their citizens to go fight wars for others, with no official sanction, then flee back to the safety of their home country at will. It could drag her home country into a war they don't want. And consider what if an opposition soldier makes it to Copenhagen and murders her, but claims it as a valid wartime battle, not murder... Making the country a legitimate battlefield and individuals immune from criminal prosecution under the Geneva convention.

Hey this story is false, officials only presumed the rice to be plastic when the first article was published. After testing it was not (see bottom or article for the most recent source on the Nigeria incident). http://www.snopes.com/plastic-rice-from-china/

Also plastic rice would just cost more to produce than real rice, probably the cheapest food in the world. Plastic rice does exist, but for created for fake display food only.

Before credit cards as we know them now, there was this thing called lay-away. MrsO told me that's how she could afford nice clothes when she was a poor single working girl.

This "barnacle" appears to be larger and bulkier than a "boot".
I would also image that it would be possible to puncture the the suction skirt and remove it yourself. Slide a knife under the edge and give them a few cuts, no angle-grinder required.
