Is It Normal For Your Dog To Eat Grass?

It is said that some animals, like dogs, try to make themselves sick by eating grass. You might have heard or read about this before, and you might have panicked when you saw your dog eat grass. Hopefully, this isn’t really the case. According to Dr. Stephanie Austin, a veterinarian, dogs eating grass is a normal behavior.

“Grass or plant eating is a widely recognized normal behavior amongst domestic dogs,”...
According to Dr. Austin, grazing shouldn’t cause any alarm for dog parents.
“Rarely does this cause problems and rarely is it indicative of any problems,” Dr. Austin said. “Often the dog is just having fun.”

Dr. Austin, however, states that there is a time where you should be worried, and that time is when your dog ingests a plant that is potentially toxic to it.

My golden almost always threw up after eating grass. She would only eat grass when she already had an upset stomach, so I guess it was something she would do to induce vomiting.
However, my rottweiler never ate grass and the lab seemed to do it at random for no reason at all and never threw up. The current lab mix seems to do it on an upset stomach, but never throws up.
I'm sure there's a trend in there, but it seems to be more of an individual dog thing.

Prolly ok depending on the type of grass. Altho - I have seen videos of dogs and monkeys eating things and then dying from it. I mean, looking at how many people die from type 2 diabetes , smoking, and cardiovascular disease, can't really put everything in a bubble. The mind wants what it wants, regardless of the consequences.

When I was young, common knowledge stated that young dogs do well on 30% carbohydrates as long as they are cooked. Now there are advocates for all animal diets as well as raw diets. I counter such claims with the observation that dogs eat grass.
