What Is It? game 323

Hey look! It's time for our collaboration with the wonderful What Is It? Blog! Do you know what the object in this picture is? It doesn't really matter if you do, because we are looking for the funniest guesses. You can win a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! But first, read the rules:

Place your guess in the comment section below. One guess per comment, please, though you can enter as many as you'd like. Two winners who submit funny and/or clever (albeit ultimately wrong) answers will each win a T-shirt from the NeatoShop.

If you guess the correct answer, you'll get a big pat on the back.

Please write your T-shirt selection alongside your guess. If you don't include a selection, you forfeit the prize, okay? May we suggest the Science T-Shirt, Funny T-Shirt and Artist-Designed T-Shirts?

This ia one of several mystery items of the week at the What Is It? Blog. Good luck!

Update: The mystery tool is an ice pick. A serious ice pick. Your funny answers were good, too. One came from tchitchou, who said, “That's an old device used to curve bananas. This version is no longer used because workers were cutting their fingers too often. A round version is now used.” That’s good for a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Phil and Buster had a winning answer, too: “This is a device my third grade teacher used to demonstrate the difference between a dull ache and a sharp pain.” Ha! Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to everyone who played. See the answers to all of the mystery items of the week at the What is It? blog.

This is the early inspiration for those paper fastener brads (the kind that you push through the paper and then split the ends). This was made to hold large pieces of leather to the ground to curing, but when the end of one split open, the maker decided to make them small to hold paper instead.

It's a tree-climber's axe. One strong swing to lodge this into the tree, then you've made a hand-hold as well as a foot hold for yourself. A series of these can get a man high into the trees.

It's the Hulk's boomerang! Originally, it was a long straight mace, but he bent it and pressed it together until it became his favorite throwing toy / weapon.

It's Ben Franklin's favorite practical joke. He tied the ball to his kite string and stuck the pointy end right next to his friend. When lightning stuck, the friend would get shocked, and a good time would be had by all.

It's an ice pick for people who weren't strong enough to use the axe-type. If the wielder of this pick couldn't get the pick wedged deep enough into the ice, they could his the ball with a hammer until it was far enough in.

This is an ancient carpenter's guild training tool used to teach apprentices how to swing a hammer & hit a nail without hitting their thumb. As they improved, the handle & nail shrank until they were using just a nail without a handle.

This is the reason why the town tailor should not insult the town blacksmith. Suddenly your scissors are less effective.

It's a golf-course practical joke. The ball tip was typically painted white and the object was buried into the ground. When people mis-took the while ball for their own golf ball, they would get quite a surprise when they hit it with their clubs.

In northern England, when two herds of sheep need to use the same road, a sheepdog would be sent to the place where the two herds would meet. The dog would hold this "merging traffic" sign in its mouth by way of the comfortable wooden handle, to warn the other herd of the oncoming traffic.

I don't know why we are making this so complicated...this device was utilized by the Dutch as far back as 1230 AD to form the mold for wooden shoes or clogs. They would cut down the trees and then dig a hole in the tree big enough for this device, which they commonly termed the "verstoppen vorm" or "clog shape." They would then proceed to form the shoe around the mold.

It's a NunchKen, an early attempt at hybridizing Ninja weaponry. This is a cross between a shuriken and nunchuck. Sadly, it lacked the aerodynamics to discretely slay one's victim. It merely gave concussions when the ball-end bounced off of the target's head.

It's a manual bagel reamer. It was used to bore holes into freshly baked bagels until Albert Einstein realized it was easier to put the holes in before. His discovery allowed him to found Einstein's bagels in 1996.
