Question of the Day

Tom Baker, who played the Fourth Doctor on Doctor Who, is sometimes referred to as the American Doctor. This is because it was during his tenure that the series was widely distributed in the United States. So Baker came to define the original Doctor, though he followed others. As one fan recently told me, those that came after Baker seemed weird.

Who is your favorite Doctor?

I like what Stephen Moffat said about his favorite Doctor always being the current one.

Thus far I've seen all of the new series and I'm slowly making my way through the originals... William Hartnell was quite a shock after Eccleston, Tennant, and Smith's versions of the character. A friend of mine is further along in the original series, and she really likes Troughton; in her words, he has "swaggar". She says (and so far I agree) that the Doctor himself is such a great character that she can't really pick a favorite. She just loves the Doctor and all of his faces as a whole. :)

I'd like to know who everyone's favorite companions or side characters are. In the new series, I've come to like Amy and Rory very much- probably more than I've liked any of the other new series companions (even though I've liked all of the main ones- Rose, Martha, Jack, Donna, even Mickey :) ). Lady Christina was interesting, I was sad that she only got the one episode.

As far as the old series, I've only seen Susan, Ian, and Barbara. Susan doesn't ever seem to do anything except giggle or scream and cry, there's very little middle ground. Ian's alright and I do like him, but Barbara is much more interesting. She grows from a stereotypical damsel in distress to a much stronger, take-charge kind of character, even though the Doctor and Ian treat her like she's not capable of much.

Growing up with the series on PBS, my initial favorite was Tom Baker, then in my teen years, Sylvester McCoy (especially the darker "chess player" version from the final seasons and first few novels)

Now, I'm torn between Troughton (who, no offense to Billy Hartnell, was the first truly "Doctor-y" Doctor, and the one by which all subsequent Doctors took their lead) and Tom Baker again, though Matt Smith is definitely shaping up to be one of my all-time favorites.

I grew up with Tom Baker, but David Tennant made Doctor Who fun again. Eccleston was good, but so serious that it seemed he was going to glower everyone into submission. The new guy is growing on me, though.

The previous doctor is my favorite, but the last season's episodes have been my favorite of all time. Great stuff. I hope they can top it.
