Alexi McCarthy, an art director, designed and built Face Shelving with his son. It's a cute look and easy to build with the step-by-step instructions that McCarthy provides. Screws hold the pieces together. McCarthy mounted the eyes with double-sided poster tape.

I often think to myself "I wish there was a shelving solution that used vastly more wood than other methods, was impractical at actually storing things on and was asthetically fairly unappealing". All that work for one small patch of short book storage. Kind of the "I don't really read but having books looks good" solution. Like having colour matched books. Which they also do in this photo.
