Fake and Biased News

We live in a time where there is a concern over “fake news”. But it seems that we are not only concerned about fake news, as a new study finds that people distinguish between dishonest and biased information sources. A source may lose its credibility with people, even if they believe the source is honest, researchers found out.

That means untruthful – or “fake” – news isn’t the only issue for consumers.
“If you want to be seen as a credible source, you have to be objective, as well as honest and knowledgeable,” said Laura Wallace, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher in psychology at The Ohio State University.
The findings are significant because most research has suggested that source credibility is a combination of trustworthiness and expertise, Wallace said. Bias had not been considered, or was viewed as part of trustworthiness.

When I teach media literacy at my college library, I directly teach that there's no such thing as objectivity (including in my own instruction on the subject) and that one should not be overly-concerned about bias. It's concealed bias that is hazardous. If you know the agenda or bias, you can take it into account when using the information source.
Anecdata: lately, I've noticed students using the adjective "biased" to refer to sources of information that are defective for other reasons. If a source is out of date, confusing, irrelevant, or unverifiable, it's "biased".

Nailed it. For the most part, the 4th Estate has lost its objectivity. That's the problem. And it's a big one.

Sometimes the news is fake, sometimes its real but without proper context. And sometimes the news is real, but you don't like it so it becomes "fake". One thing is for sure - never trust anyone who throws around words like "objective" "free will" "equal" "fair". Being alive at all is a subjective experience that's constantly being pushed around by the forces of the universe. No such thing as free, fair, equal, objective, etc. Nothing is equal and fair between sea lions and killer whales. Nothing is fair about michael jordans genetic advantages over me, and vice versa. No matter how objective you think you're being, its "subjective" that you care at all. The starting place is always subjectivity. You could always be doing something else instead, but you aren't.
