Photos of the Amazon Fires

While fires are common during the dry season in Brazil, the fires this year have set an alarming record. The National Space Research Institute of the country states that they have recorded over 77,000 wildfires in Brazil this year, which is an 85% rise over last year. Around half of these fires occurred in the Amazon region.

Not quite all. From that article:
Mr. Cochrane noted that while a large majority of the fires were on land that had already been cleared, many others were detected burning with particular intensity. He said these were likely deforestation fires, not just fires for clearing previously deforested land.

They're definitely related to agriculture: the deforestation fires are on the edges of the farms (as a mean to expand the arable lands, I'm sure).
