The Traffic Zone

Jay Ward, the genius behind Rocky the Flying Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose, went on to other things after moose-and-squirrel had run their course. Among other cartoon series, he produced The Dudley Do-Right Show, George of the Jungle, Super Chicken, and Hoppity Hooper.

The latter is one of the best - and the most unusual - cartoon series that has ever appeared on television; a scoundrelly con man of a fox voiced by the wonderful Hans Conried, a simple bugle-playing bear voiced by co-producer Bill Scott (also the voice of Bullwinkle), and a naive but energetic frog, all of whom carom from adventure to adventure. Still following the same formula that worked so well for moose-and-squirrel, Hoppity Hooper was ofttimes wonderful satire, and no better example exists than The Traffic Zone episode.

A keen parody of the then-popular Twilight Zone television series, Ward and co. took no prisoners in this 20-minute exercise in satire. Sadly, Hoppity Hooper lasted but 17 episodes, all of which are today available on YouTube. Watch this one and see what your grandparents thought was funny.

I'm old enough to have watched these as a child and now the grandkids are getting introduced to what they would never otherwise know about. More coming!
