Nobody really thinks about why certain things are the way they are, we mostly just accept them as we know them today. However, there is a little bit of history when it comes to car tires. Originally, they were off white in color and then they became bright white.

Just guessing, when they wore down you'd have white marks all over the road. But if you had black tires on black road, you'd see it alot less.

Carbon black is also really useful for adding UV resistance to many kinds of plastics. Often if given a choice between an indoor or outdoor version of some plastic thingmabob, the indoor one is slight cheaper and white, and the outdoor one is black.
