Why Pi Day 2016 Is Special

We always celebrate the date on March 14, because it’s Pi Day -and the birthday of Albert Einstein, too! It’s a day to eat Pi and wear your Pi Day t-shirt. If you don’t have one, there are plenty to be had at the NeatoShop, so you’ll be ready for next year. But this year’s Pi Day is a bit more mathematically significant than the average year.

See, the number we know as pi, the ratio of a circle to its diameter, is 3.14159265359… which can go on to infinity if you wanted to figure it further. March 14 is often abbreviated as 3/14 here in the States. But if you included a few extra digits, the next “159,” you can round up to “16” for the year. Yeah, it’s all just a numbers game and the numbers on the calendar we use have nothing to do with the world of math, but we can take the opportunity to teach our children about pi and Einstein and eat pie! There are other celebrations going on for Pi Day you can read about at Time.
