"Monster" Lucille Ball Statue Erected in New York - Neatorama

Actress Lucille Ball, who was most famous for her 1950s show I Love Lucy, grew up in the town Celoron, which is in western New York. In 2009, officials erected a bronze statue to honor her. It shows a scene from an episode of her signature show.

The people of Celoron love Lucy. But they hate the statue. It's so ugly that they want it torn down. The New York Daily News reports:

"It looks like a monster," a Celoron man championing the cause told the Daily News. “It not only does not look like Lucy, it doesn’t look human. And at nighttime it’s even scarier."

He has a point. But look into the hungry eyes of that statue. Do you really think that it's safe to try to pull it down?

Yeah, we have overwhelming evidence of what Lucy looked like, and she had a very distinctive look. But that ain't it.

If you put an axe in that statue's hand, it would be the perfect accessory for those soulless eyes and grimace.

To me, it looks like J. Jonah Jameson in drag . . . not that there is anything wrong with that . .

how did this "artist" get the commission in the first place? if their previous work was actually good the town should have refused payment and sued to get their deposit back. if the previous work looks like this whoever gave them the contract should be fired and perhaps flogged.

I compared it elsewhere to Clint Howard wearing plastic Devo hair. But I just realized the greatest enigma of the thing -- The artist actually seems to have gone to the trouble of trying to depict Lucy's clothing, down to her necklace, as it actually appeared in the Vitameatavegamin sketch, but didn't even bother with the hair.

I can accept that the features are hideous and bear no resemblance to Lucy -- that's just a matter of talent. But what's with the hair? Did he run out of time?
