The Hottest Place on Earth

(YouTube link)

Whaddaya know -while we're relying on weather stations and meteorologists to tell us how hot it is outside, NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites scan the whole planet for temperature! Using this data, MinuteEarth explains where the hottest spot on the Earth's surface is. -via Geeks Are Sexy

On a very tangential note, the Fort Irwin National Training Center dips into Death Valley. The last time I was there in 2004, my team leader decided to wear the same pants through 2 months of training (he did shower, but never changed his pants).

At the end of the exercises he stood the almost completely white, sweat-encrusted pants up on end without support, and a good laugh was had by all.

So yeah, Death Valley is hot.
