Michael R...it could do what you are referring to with just one train going on a loop underneath the track. The creator, Al Seckel, states that it is just one train, "There is one train; it is as long as you see," he says.

Looks like there are two trains.
As the first enters the tunnel, it immediately diverts underneath the table and continues in a loop.
Meanwhile, a second train which has been hiding in motion underneath, emerges from it's loop from under the table at the exit of the tunnel to appear as if train #1 has disappeared.
And so on...

Ahem, a true Geek would have a Tardis replica that appears & disappears on a flatbed car when the train goes in or our of the tunnel. That would be a mind bend.
