Live Long and Prosper

This picture was taken in the Oval Office on February 29th. Look at those smiles and tell me which one is more excited about the photo opportunity. Link -via Laughing Squid (Image credit: Nichelle Nichols)

DPruitt, politics aside (please, dear God, no more politics!), the whole Live Long and Prosper shtick should be strictly Leonard Nimoy's shtick. But it has come to stand for Star Trek itself. George Takei flogs it, Nichelle Nichols flogs it - it's just what they do.

We seem to forget the importance of her existence on a show like Star Trek meant. Even in her mini-skirt and 60's female "operator" position, she represented a future where black people weren't marginalized. Obama, whatever you may think of his politics, represents the same thing to a lot of people, in a world where Jim Crow still seems to be the order of the day in some circles.

I suspect her celebrity as an actress is a lot less important here than her role in what is often "cited as the first example of an inter-racial kiss on United States television" (1968). Her work for NASA and 'Women in Motion' should not be overlooked either.

You are right Ramalan, curmudgeonly congress that has been in in office less than two years is why he passed a 2700 page unconstitutional socialist monstrosity that is going to be overturned this summer and also the reason that everything he tried in the first two years when he had total control over the white house and congress has only made things worse. The real question I have though is...why are they making the Vulcan hand sign? Nimoy I could understand, but Uhura?

I don't want this to be too political but I'd rather a president take more photos with celebrities then be on vacation at his Texas ranch.

And it is also a great photo.

well Jon A, if I'm the next person then I guess you're probama. I believe he's trying to do what's best for this country and it's not his fault he has to deal with a curmudgeonly congress.

I think she's pretty proud, but he looks like a kid at a convention. Of course, I don't know if that's how he always smiles or not.

Good for him.

Y'all play nice, now. I'd hate to have to shut the comments down here. I'm a big fan of Uhura. She posted the pic and I thought it was neat.

Update: I have altered the comment thread by removing the comments leading up to name-calling. Pray I do not alter it further.

Who's more excited? I'd say the guy who wants Americans indefinetly detained...you, know, the guy who was supposed to uphold the Constitution. But he's with Uhura, which means he's cool or something, right?

ya know, there is nothing wrong with what he does, its just how often he is doing it and i have to say....he is the most president to have soooo many interviews while still president...so many celebrity visits....just not enough TLC for the troops. I speak from personal experience....sigh i cant wait for election...damn this pic of him makes me sad.

Right myasam79. After all, no president has ever met celebrities .. even. President Obama is certainly the first to have celeb guests at the White House.

le sigh ...
