Mama Whale Lifts up Baby Whale to See the Humans

(Video Link)

Whenever I take my kids to the zoo, I have to pick them up so that they can get good views of the animals. Maybe that's what this mother gray whale is doing by pushing her baby up to the boat full of friendly, curious humans off of Baja California.

I used to live not far from there... visiting these whales was an incredible experience. They were so curious. Something like forty of them were constantly coming up to our tiny boat, the little ones especially, rolling over on their bellies, wanting to be touched... it was indescribable. One of the real highlights of living on the Baja (and there were many, so that's saying a lot).

I had the same thing happen on a whale watching tour in Maui. The mother was perpendicular to the boat and her baby swam across her nose and she lifted it completely out of the water. Obviously a proud Mama. It was a moment to remember. No caterwauling on our boat though, just gasps.

If it weren't for that annoying woman's squealing and caterwauling, it would've been perfect. Astounding encounter. Now if we could only get Japan to stop whaling all together. Of course whales are curious about us, that's logical.
