Art Student Covertly Hangs Painting in Art Museum

If you want something done right, you're better off doing it yourself. In that spirit, Polish art student Andrzej Sobiepan decided that his work belonged in a museum, regardless of what museum officials wanted. So when a guard wasn't looking, he discreetly hung it on a wall:

Sobiepan, a Wroclaw Fine Arts Academy student whose last name means "his own master," said he was inspired by the elusive British graffiti artist known only as Banksy. His own painting is small, white and green, and partly uses swine leather to show a drooping acacia leaf.

On Dec. 10, Sobiepan put it up in a room with contemporary Polish art when a guard at the museum was looking the other way. Museum officials didn't notice the new painting for three days.

When museum staff discovered Sobiepan's work, they decided to keep it. But they moved it to the museum cafe. You can see a full-size photo of the painting at the link.

I would have moved it to a bathroom in the basement because that is crap.

And yes I know some hipster is going to chime in about "art being in the eye of the beholder". Well I disagree...... garbage is garbage no matter how much glitter and glue you use.

i would have casually tossed it in the trash. read:

""I decided that I will not wait 30 or 40 years for my works to appear at a place like this," Sobiepan told TVN24. "I want to benefit from them in the here and now.""

the guy doesn't get it. the piece itself is supposed to "benifit"... NOT the artist. should a true artist perform their craft all the while thinking of how they themselves will "benifit" from their piece??? whatever. and why does he think his work will automatically end up in a museum?!?! well, this IS the age of the participation trophy, right...

@houndogg -- I get that, and you have a fair point. But I also think of the artist's actions as akin to Kirk's resolution of the Kobayashi Maru test. He cheated in order to win a no-win scenario and was awarded a commendation for original thinking. What this artist did broke the rules, but it was also cunning and harmed no one. I don't care for his art, but I appreciate shrewd, original thinking.
