Looks like members of the old 24th New York Baseball Regiment from Cooperstown.

Zoom it and you can see where he was pasted into it.

Photobombing was much harder when it took up to 20 minutes of sitting for a single shot.

Judging by the hat emblems, this picture is post-Civil War by about 25 years. By then faster shutter speeds were the norm, especially when shooting outdoors.
