UN Treaty for Mother Earth's Rights

We've got human rights, animal rights, ... but what about the rights of Mother Earth? That's right - Bolivia has just drafted a United Nations treaty giving "Mother Earth" the same rights as humans:

The bid aims to have the UN recognize the Earth as a living entity that humans have sought to "dominate and exploit" — to the point that the "well-being and existence of many beings" is now threatened.

The wording may yet evolve, but the general structure is meant to mirror Bolivia's Law of the Rights of Mother Earth, which Bolivian President Evo Morales enacted in January.

That document speaks of the country's natural resources as "blessings," and grants the Earth a series of specific rights that include rights to life, water and clean air; the right to repair livelihoods affected by human activities; and the right to be free from pollution.

It also establishes a Ministry of Mother Earth, and provides the planet with an ombudsman whose job is to hear nature's complaints as voiced by activist and other groups, including the state.

Great! But now earth has been elevated to the same status as a corporation. Corporation = Human = Earth. Whereas it should be Earth->Human->Corporation. In order of causal significance.

I'm with bikebreath. Who is it decides what Earth wants? Maybe Earth likes noxious atmospheres. Maybe she's tired of teeming all the time.

Does President Morales think he is greater than God? Genesis 1 says we are to take dominion over the Earth and subdue it (though we ought to be responsible in doing so).

Um...so...who are her lawyers, Mars and Venus? The danger in the earth having rights is those who are empowered to enforce them. What about the earth violating our human rights with natural disasters? What do I sue for? This sounds like a great idea.

The earth owns you, no amount of discussion will change it. Kick and scream and complain. It made you, it will take you out. The earth is the only ruler who says "Argue amongst yourselves, but obey."

Unlike human dictators, you can curse the earth all you want, you can deny it has any power over you and you can rally against it, but you still have to obey it.

heh- Maybe we are all part of Gaia's elaborate plan to undo the nasty work of the stromatolites who unbalanced the original atmosphere with their excess oxygen!

Ok, so first a woman marries a dolphin, and now this... I'd like to take this moment to announce my engagement with the earth, I'm proposed to her last week, and after thinking it over she said yes. Invitations will be sent out soon to all her friends... Oh yeah and the wedding will be in california, ya know, with their community property laws and all...

@samuel

That's pretty much the way it was written in Thomas:

What is the bridal chamber, if not the place of trust and consciousness in the embrace? It is an icon of Union, beyond all forms of possession; here is where the veil is torn from top to bottom; here is where some arise and awaken.

o Kevin George: a few more Bible verses for you>>

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee;
And the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee;
Or speak to the Earth, and she shall teach thee,
And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
Who knoweth not in all these
that the hand of the Lord hath wrought them:
In whose hand
Is the soul of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind.
Job 12:7-10

For ye shall go out with ajoy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the wood shall clap their hands. ISAIAH 55 :12

And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. Rev. 11:18

I personally like the first verse. It states that the Earth could teach us a whole lot if we werent so damn arrogant to think we already know it. AND GOD COUNSELLS US TO TALK TO HER... not treat her like a testtube but TALK.... even God know he created her sentient... living... being..... !

Some pretty humorus and humorless takes here. Native Americans can teach any of you who care to learn, about teh protocols of asking Mother permission, and listening for her answers and her help. Their ability to split clouds or bring in rain has its scientific basis behind it. Study Dr. Emoto who shows how thoughts, words, change water and Hans Yanny who produced sound pictures called chalandi through cymatics. Oh yeah and Cleve Backster who pioneered Plant biofeedback. Each valley, each vale, and mountain has its own caretaker spirits and elementals that keep the ecosystems of those parts in balance. When a mountain is blown up and stream beds buried, teh spirits lose their home, and their jobs. Some are dazed but other get pissed off... and you wonder why the storms are getting worse... You got a lot of homeless spirits with nothing to do but get together and party hearty, Vortexes which are meant to supply energy are moved, cut off, and poisoned. Vortexes are similar to the human chakra system which supplies life force to teh physical. When holes are cut into her, concrete paved over her, bombs exploded in and on her, you can see the physical change but that is not all. There is a spiritual/energy change too one which matches the see-able destruction. Do some research on the Flower of Life and Sacred Geometry and learn about how mathmatically perfect all creation is. Get some respect for the EArth Mother. Then stop killing her. After all like several of you commented... we need her. She does not need us.
