15 Alien Vegetables Found on Earth

The salak fruit, native to Indonesia, has an outer skin resembling that of a snake. The pulp inside divides into three edible lobes. Agriculture Guide has pictures of this fruit and fourteen other odd-looking fruits and vegetables.

Soursop is very unusual, I had it years ago when I went to aruba. It's basicly large seeds covered in a sweet/sour white fruit flesh, but the one I tried was nothing like strawberry and pineapple.

Sugar apple looks like what the Filipinos call "atis" (AH-teese). The meat is granular like sugar. When ripe, it's so soft that it practically falls apart in your hand.

The spikes of durian are _hard_. You could make a mace with it, though I haven't ever heard that it's ever been done! It's stinky and it's not worth trying, if you ask me.

In the US, lychee can be found in a can at any Asian mart. Buy some. No adventurousness necessary. It's fragrant and sweet. It has great potential for fancy dessert recipes. Mostly, it's eaten plain.

I've had kiwano (horned melon) before. It's pretty good: very mild, with a sort of cucumber-lemon-banana flavor. Lots of seeds though; you'll want to google "how to eat a kiwano" before trying it.
