Woman Engaged to Marry Herself

Chen Wei-yih of Taiwan has found the right person to marry -- herself. She's spending $5,675 on a groom-less wedding that concludes with a honeymoon in Australia:

"Age thirty is a prime period for me. My work and experience are in good shape, but I haven't found a partner, so what can I do?" Chen said.

"It's not that I'm anti-marriage. I just hope that I can express a different idea within the bounds of a tradition," she added.[...]

"If I had a steady boyfriend, I wouldn't do this," Chen said. "It would be offensive to him, anyway."

She's doing something pretty crazy, but I wouldn't call her crazy herself. I kind of like her reasoning, actually. At least she's having more fun than I am now.

It's good to have silly news every now and then.

Nothing like a big can of Self Delusion to justify pretty much anything.

Perhaps if she looked for "Mr. Good Enough" instead of "Mr. Perfect" she'd be doing the real thing.

@vonskippy Maybe Mr. Good Enough isn't interested? I'm almost 33 and am reasonably attractive (I am overweight, but so are the guys I date), and at this point in my life I'm OK with never finding a permanent partner. I'm happy enough with myself and the freedom I have. That isn't to say that I have never been interested in marriage with a fellow, but the gents don't seem to stick around long enough to find out if marriage is viable. I am, admittedly, on the shy side and don't date much.

As for the woman in the article, my feeling is that she just wanted the chance to wear the white dress, buy an outrageous diamond ring, and go on holiday somewhere that is generally "couples only" (like the Caves resort in Jamaica, sigh). Things that a single girl can't do, even if she can afford them.

I don't know why anyone would marry anyone, themself or otherwise. Just take a great vacation to Australia and enjoy your life and don't be so bound by traditions, would be my advice. Things are different in Taiwain than they are in the U.S. in that regard, though, I suppose. And @Rocky, a life without a partner is not wasted, rather it is actually enjoyed. @vonskippy, Mr. Good Enough is never good enough, it's better to be alone than marry or partner with someone who isn't right.
