Women in the Rubble

Der Spiegel has an image gallery of "Trummerfrauen," or "rubble women" who were charged by the occupying Allies with cleaning up the wreckage of German cities bombed during World War II. There weren't enough German men left to do the job, and the women had to use their bare hands and whatever equipment they could round up on their own. The job still took years. Recovered materials were sorted to be reused. Link -via TYWKIWDBI

JimH And then that string-quartet to accompany these women while they slave to clean up the place- Near to a beautiful oilpainting.

Yep- Those women together with older men and younger children were drafted into service. They really did clean up the mess out of their own free will only stimulated by the Allied forces... Band of Brothers -however good a series it was- is not an only pure objective truthful document.

There's a reference to this in Band
of Brothers (the book) where the
soldiers note the industriousness
of the Germans and compare it negatively
with the Dutch & French. Many of them
felt that the German were more like
Americans in this respect - that
they wouldn't sit around and wait
for someone else (the government) to
clean up a mess on their doorstep.
