Rent a White Guy

Mitch Moxley worked in a unique industry in China: being a white man. Apparently, it's beneficial in the eyes of some Chinese businessmen to have white men standing around looking important. So that's what Moxley and others have been paid to do:

“I call these things ‘White Guy in a Tie’ events,” a Canadian friend of a friend named Jake told me during the recruitment pitch he gave me in Beijing, where I live. “Basically, you put on a suit, shake some hands, and make some money. We’ll be in ‘quality control,’ but nobody’s gonna be doing any quality control. You in?”

I was.

And so I became a fake businessman in China, an often lucrative gig for underworked expatriates here. One friend, an American who works in film, was paid to represent a Canadian company and give a speech espousing a low-carbon future. Another was flown to Shanghai to act as a seasonal-gifts buyer. Recruiting fake businessmen is one way to create the image—particularly, the image of connection—that Chinese companies crave. My Chinese-language tutor, at first aghast about how much we were getting paid, put it this way: “Having foreigners in nice suits gives the company face.”

A fascinating piece. Not sure how 'neat' this is, however. It sounds like some sort of mutual use - or abuse - I am not sure which... But leaves me wondering who has the upperhand here. or if that really matters.

Overalll,glad I read about this but = not neat!

Being the Malaysian I am, I know what other people of East Asian or Indian descent see in another white European or North American individual as - a unique character who should be treated with greater reverence than their other peers.

Sad to say that in about 100 years time, current demographic trends will mean that "white" people will really become an exclusively rare commodity in many countries . . .

Juylians—why is it sad? It seems to me it's just a color. If, in 100 years, white people are increasingly rare, and the many shades begin to become one, maybe racism will also be increasingly rare. (Or maybe racism will start to be based on subtler differences.)

@Lester

People will always find a reason to hate each other, but let’s just hope that there will be fewer excuses for people to brush off responsibility for their actions.

I've considered doing something similar called "Rent a tall person". Being well over 6' tall, I routinely get asked to help people retrieve things from tall shelves in stores (especially around gift giving holidays). I've even had one person, whom I helped, search a store to find me several minutes later to help them again. I just need to figure out how to charge for it...

Reminds me of an episode of Better off Ted. I think it was the episode where the new motion detectors that controlled the power and lights and such wasn't detecting the black employees so they hired white guys to follow them around.
Well it's not really the same thing but it reminded me of it :P

This is no different than using model for promotions, but it's so silly that the people think that a white guy’s presence would make their business more desirable. Seriously, anybody that needs anything done right knows that they need a woman’s assistance. :P
