The 18 Strangest Airports

Popular Mechanics has a photo gallery of eighteen unusual airports around the world, including the above airport of Courchevel, a town in the French Alps. The runway has a hill the middle with a 18.5% grade. Landing on this airstrip is so difficult that it requires a special pilot's certification. via Glenn Reynolds| Photo: Popular Mechanics

Normalizing Glen Reynolds is like mainstreaming Glenn Beck. The damage that they have done to the discourse in this country will take decades to undo. I don't do links to these people.

There is something wrong with this photo. I really doubt they would construct the buildings along the slope as the building on the right.

That's an optical illusion, Bill, that building is on level ground. The hill runs down away from it - you can see where they built up the ground to grade for the second building, the one with the air traffic control tower, and also see where they flattened out the start of the runway at the far left. So, from camera, the hill runs down, flattens out, then turns downward again.

I've been skiing near Courchevel and it is bloody weird seeing planes land on a hill, surrounded by mountains! I would well-recommend this ski-resort

I used to travel to Gisborne, New Zealand on a regular basis. The main runway there has an active railway line running through it.
