I, Cthulhu

Author Neil Gaiman contributed a story to Tor called "I, Cthulhu, Or, What's A Tentacle-Faced Thing Like Me Doing In A Sunken City Like This (Latitude 47° 9' S, Longitude 126°43' W)."  As usual, Mr. Gaiman's humor is fantastic and fun.  (This little gem is from 1986.)

I was spawned uncounted aeons ago, in the dark mists of Khhaa’yngnaiih (no, of course I don’t know how to spell it. Write it as it sounds), of nameless nightmare parents, under a gibbous moon. It wasn’t the moon of this planet, of course, it was a real moon. On some nights it filled over half the sky and as it rose you could watch the crimson blood drip and trickle down its bloated face, staining it red, until at its height it bathed the swamps and towers in a gory dead red light.

It does not matter what Wikipedia says Lovecraft spelled it "Cthulhu" as did all of the original members of the Lovecraft Circle, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, Robert Bloch, Frank Belknap Long, and Henry Kuttner. and, to some extent, August
Derelth. I think that these provide bona fides for the spelling "Cthulhu". All else, in my opinion, is vulgarity.

Wikipedia says: 'Cthulhu has also been spelled as Tulu, Clulu, Clooloo, Cthulu, C'thulhu, Cighulu, Cathulu, Kathulu, Kutulu, Kthulhu, Q’thulu, Ktulu, Kthulhut, Kulhu, Kutunluu, Cuitiliú, Thu Thu,[2] and in many other ways.' for what that's worth. (their reference is Harms, "Cthulhu," "PanChulhu," The Encyclopedia Cthulhiana, p. 64. )
