Fat Skunk Put on Diet

A skunk named Mr. Bumble was turned over to the RSPCA when his owners could no longer handle him. The skunk, who loves bacon sandwiches, weighed in at 14 pounds! Mr. Bumble is now at Tropiquaria Animal Park in Watchet, England and is on a weight-loss regimen.

Park owner Chris Noisier told the BBC: "We're now working on dieting him down to what he should be and clearly bacon butties are not a normal part of a skunk's diet in the wild.

"We're putting him on the vegetarian option at the moment. It's very much like a human weight watching issue.

"He is getting to meet lots of new people so there's lots going on in his life and I suspect it's making up for the lack of his old favourite food."

I learned a lot about pet skunks while I was a "Pose your pets with Santa" at a pet store. One family brought by their pet skunk, which was very sweet, but its claws got tangled in my horrible fake beard, and I thought that she would maul me, (they have very sharp claws and teeth)but she just sat still as they untangled her. Most pet skunks suffer from being overweight, even if you feed them the most dietetic cat food around, which is what is recommended. This is probably because their diet in the wild is mostly insects, grubs, earthworms, and eggs if they can manage it, and I'm sure that they burn a lot more calories getting that food in the wild, too. But they do make excellent pets. My dogs would probably disagree.

Is this not plain and simpel criminal? When these "owners"saw that this skunk got fatter and fatter, they should have heared all the alarmbells chime at the same time. But no instead they just kept on feeding the animal Bacon-sandwiches. That is slupid neglect and ignorance and these guys should be punished or at least given a non-voluntary timewise and financially very expensive course on their own costs in animal-care and animal-health. I find this an outrage.

I have a pet skunk, and we really enjoy having him. We're always learning something new about him, and it's great to be able to educate other people about skunks in general. Our skunk is very mild mannered if a little on the nervous side. We took him to a local county fair to enter him into a 4-H pet contest. He wasn't allowed to compete, because they didn't have a category to place him in, but they let us bring him into the ring, show him off, and let people ask questions. He patiently hung out while people came by and petted him, photographed him, and asked questions for 4 hours.
He is also rather rotund. And we feed him fruit, veggies, eggs, yogurt, and olive oil on a rotating basis, and although he has lost 3 lbs, which is a huge amount in such a small animal, (he was 15lbs when he came to live with us) he is still obese. Skunks LOVE to eat, and they will get into ANYTHING if there's a chance of food being obtained. Lock up your fridge, cupboards, and pantry, because a skunk will open all of them. They are very strong, and very smart. Check out all the different colors domestic skunks come in, and check out youtube for videos on domestic skunks, there is some funny stuff!
