The Miracle Liquid: Electrolyzed Water

The miracle liquid can clean your toilet and is powerful enough to kill anthrax spores and oh, you can drink it because it's just ... water.

Here's the skinny on the miracle liquid known as electrolyzed water:

It turns out that zapping salt water with low-voltage electricity creates a couple of powerful yet nontoxic cleaning agents. Sodium ions are converted into sodium hydroxide, an alkaline liquid that cleans and degreases like detergent, but without the scrubbing bubbles. Chloride ions become hypochlorous acid, a potent disinfectant known as acid water.

"It's 10 times more effective than bleach in killing bacteria," said Yen-Con Hung, a professor of food science at the University of Georgia-Griffin, who has been researching electrolyzed water for more than a decade. "And it's safe."

Having taught chemistry, I'm often asked the question 'where will we ever use this stuff?'. Here is a perfect example.

Essentially, this is just chemistry at work. You've taken some salt water, zapped it with electricity, and created a couple of new chemicals. The same outcome could be achieved by mixing some bleach with vinegar in a bucket and diluting it down massively with a heap of water. But that doesn't sound as magic as using electricity on plain old salt water, now does it?

This stuff is popular in places like Japan and Korea, and occasionally raises its head in the west, sadly. It will die off again before bobbing back up once more in five years time.

No no no. It's not "just water".

It's water with STUFF IN IT. The degreaser is water with sodium ions in it. The disinfectant is water with chloride ions in it. Put another way, salt water is "just water" that happens to have BOTH sodium ions and chloride ions in it.

When separated it won't last long, and (I'm guessing) ends up as lye for the sodium side and and hydrochloric acid for the chloride side, but it probably depends a whole lot on what else is in the water you started with.

Sullynick...yes I can put some in a bottle and ship it to you!! I have a wonderful machine that makes it, and I clean my stove, take out stains, wash vegetables and more. The strong acid water disinfects, and is used for everything from sore throats, to cuts, killing salmonella when handling chicken, and on and on. This same machine makes drinking water which is alkaline 8.5 to 9.5 , microclustered and a superantioxidant.

I have lived with fibromyalgia and migraine headaches for 20 years and this water was the only thing that finally helped me, after numerous meds, doctors, hospitalization, natural remedies...you name it. Mine is not an unusual story. It's all about removing acidity from the body.

I have studied this water for 2 years and have a blog dedicated to it. Unfortunately, I am already bordering on spamming now, (I am sure the hard core sticklers of you will slap my hand!) so I cannot post a link here. If you want to know more you can email me at watertobewell@comcast.net

For all of the people who make claims of
"snake oil" do your homework before making
a claim you really know nothing about,
besides what you "read on the internet".
You are as gullible as the people whom you claim are "taken in with snake oil".

I have a water alkalizer.
I have tested the water before entering the device,
non-alkaline according to ph strips, and when coming out alkaline, once again tested with ph strips. You can also set the device to produce acidic water. Its basic science you can test for yourself, and not go by what you read on the internets.

@ David

You've missed the point - nobody's saying it's not alkaline. The point is, it's effectively water with bleach in it. Stating it is 10 times more effective than water with bleach when that's essentially what is being produced is what makes it snake oil.

It's not a case of believing 'what you read on the internet' as much as having a bit of science literacy.

@Athon

You've missed the point!
And again, after it was pointed out to you.
Sorry I could have been clearer,
but I thought it was obvious.
It isn't water with bleach,
and that is the point.
You can't drink bleach with no immediate consequences! You can drink alkalized or acidified water with no immediate consequences.
Yet you can clean or sterilize with acidic water,
it's been proven effect again and again,
real world and laboratory.

So what you teach chemistry,
it doesn't mean you understand it.
Knowing something and being wise are two seperate things.
You said its effectively water with bleach in it,
then why don't you drink some water with bleach in it and let me know how that works out for you!
The 10x effectiveness is debatable, the non toxicity is not.
That is the point!

For David F.T.
As to your statement, "You can't drink water with bleach..", well, what have you got to say about this advice? The agencies that give advice on what to do after an emergency advise people to put bleach into the water to disinfect it before drinking. Not very much, but it **is** drinkable, and prevents dysentery, cholera, etc., and the advice has been around for decades.

Doesn`t beat the taste and health benefits of drinking your own urine. I can put some of that in a bottle and ship it to you, if you`d like to try. I also use it to clean my stove, counters, uncooked chickens, and vegetables.
I suffer from hypertension, anemia, and chronic alcoholism, but drinking urine helps me forget.

Try it today!

Could someone tell me how to make this electrolyzed water, I know is just tap water, salt and use a 9v battery to electrolyze it, but what amount of water or salt and how long for the battery?

@Very Free

Dude seriously where do you read this crap or do you just make it up?
One of my friends drank bleach when he was kid,
it destroyed his esophagus.
This is no joke, they had to remove part of his anus,
to use, to form a new esophagus!

I just blogged this myself[1]. The short version: Yes, it is essentially just a (dilute) bleach-and-lye generator, and the "electrolyzed water" crap is pure marketing hype, but after you shovel the pile of steaming Marketing off, the device actually does do something useful. Because the bleach side of the output is acidic it likely is more effective as a disinfectant than the same concentration of (very alkaline) bottled bleach - also less stable, which is why you have to generate it and use it rather than bottling it for later.

@ David,

I'm finding it hard to take you seriously - are you honestly suggesting you don't know the difference between water diluted with a bit of bleach, and bleach straight from the bottle?

If your child did destroy their esophagus by drinking straight bleach, you have my sympathies. However I can tell you that this process merely forms the same thing as heavily diluted bleach. Water supplies are treated with chlorine - do you think drinking tap water is the same as drinking straight liquid chlorine?

We know that the MMS (28% sodium chlorite) generates chlorine
dioxide (that’s CLO2) when mixed with vinegar. The reason why it
produces chlorine dioxide when mixed with vinegar is because the acetic
acid (in the vinegar) causes the solution to be neutralized or, better than
that, causes it to be slightly acidic. The MMS solution is normally
extremely alkaline. When it is made acidic, by adding the vinegar, it
becomes slightly unstable and it begins to release chlorine dioxide. By
measuring the drops and the acetic acid we know that it creates about 3
mg of chlorine dioxide in approximately three minutes. Then when we
add apple juice (or other juice without vitamin C) it dilutes the solution
so that there is about 1 ppm of chlorine dioxide in the total apple juice
mixture. The MMS solution continues to generate chlorine dioxide but
now at a much slower rate.
About chlorine dioxide: Chlorine and chlorine dioxide have been used
to purify water and kill pathogens in hospitals and for many other
antiseptic uses for more than 100 years. Lately chlorine dioxide has been
used more and more frequently, especially to purify water. It is also
authorized by the FDA to be used to clean chicken, beef and other foods.
Research has proven chlorine dioxide to be much safer than chlorine, as
it is selective for pathogens when used in water and it does not create
compounds from other constituents in the water, which chlorine does.
Simple chemistry tells us that without doubt the same situation exists in
the body. It has been proven that chlorine in drinking water creates at
least three different carcinogenic compounds when it enters the body, but
no such compounds have been found from chlorine dioxide. The
American Society of Analytical Chemists stated in 1999 that chlorine
dioxide was the most powerful pathogen killer known to man.

It amazes me to hear how angry people can get when its not affecting them personally. Now how many of you who are so sure this is snake oil, realize the polution that is in your drinking water (bottled or whatever you use). Maybe you should try it for your blood pressure. Yes I know you are the same people that boo hoo any natural product be it suppliment or health care product. Just listen to all the new drugs the drug companies are coming out with. Who would want to just trade symptoms for their effects of using their drug? Please do your research before making up your mind on anything.

This is really funny guys. The technology you are referring to was discovered by russian scientists over 40 years ago and adopted by the japanese people in the 60's. This type of Dinking and Cleaning (which are two VERY distinctly DIFFERENT THINGS) are used in at least a hundred hospitals in Japan (prescribed to the patients to drink). The pH of the drinking water is 8.5 to 9.5 and the disinfecting or strong acid water is 2.5. The strong alkaline water is 11.5 pH. The machine has titanium plates coated in platinum, which the water flows over. There is NO BLEACH in the water!!! There is a salt water based solution used to make to the 2.5 / 11.5 waters which are made simultaneously. There are two hoses, as the machine separates the acid water from the alkaline water.
The only reason I am even writing any of this is because so much misinformation is being bantered about here. But go ahead you can call it hype...that's fine.
The thousands of people here in the US that have now been helped dramatically by drinking this water know differently, and they would just laugh at everything written here.
I hope the heat can calm down because this is only to help people...not snake oil believe me, and I am sorry you feel that way.

Fraday's law been fine tuned by Russian scientists. The revolutionary water saturated from a chamber consist of anode and cathode is used in many fields including healthcare.

Many companies or manufacturers are stating same points about the saturated water as the original manufacturer or tech developers from Russia.

Before differentiate the quality of electro water from various manufacturers, you must learn bit about chemistry to make yourself clear.

My field experiences proved (99.99%) ,that this product ( electro water)to be used properly to get the best results.

This waster is best alternative to chemicals with no doubt.

So let me get this straight: You're drinking Sodium Hydroxide (a strong alkaline) mixed with chlorinated water (effectively low concentrated hydrochloric acid) and this is supposed to be helpful? Sodium Hydroxide will start degrading your teeth enamel immediately upon consumption.

I am not a teacher or science major. But I can tel you I had cancer and a 3.5ph.
I got a (different brand) water ionizoer and got my ph up to 6.5 and that along with some other things am now 2 yrs later cancer free!
(1) Alkaline water and diet
(2) Immunocal
(3) No sugar (used stevia)
(4)graviola etc.
And mine was so bad the Dr. called me and sent a certified letter that if i went this way and not thier std treatment I would die.

NOW they say "well it MUST have been SOMETHING we did"

I haven't read anything about ORP...Oxidation-Reduction Potential ... Oxidation vs. Redox...from the debunker-experts that, frankly, seem to have no clue. Simply put, plus ORP is the "kill rate" of biological matter. It kills both biological material in the water, and in the human system.

And in most personal/home ionization machines, there is NO SALT or any other chemical added to the water. Salt is added in only one manufacturer, and only on one setting that is for 2.5-3.5 pH/10.5-11.5, which has very high positive ORP water for cleaning...and it really, really works.

Ionizers, home and now some industrial equipment, use JUST electrical energy in the form of increased ion/molecular energy. And, that is why it does not "hold", because as soon as the electrical charge is taken away, it begins to return to it's earlier "dead" state which is a high positive ORP...oxiding anything and everything, including the internal systems/body.

ORP is related...not the same...but related to this subject. It is a long-established measure of literally the energy/chi/life force that can be established as millivolts, with a very common and relatively inexpensive ORP/pH meter.

COMMERCIAL INFO ..ORP is used by pool, fish tank, and water facilities and there is a national standard also established. If it's plus (oxidative) it's killing bacteria and biological materials. The standard is +650 for the US and +750 for Germany. The acidic oxidation process is sanitizing the water sufficiently. The standard of ORP measurements is replacing just pH because that information more adequately expresses the "kill rate" and allows often for more exact, thus usually less, addition of toxic chemicals, such as bleach/chlorine. The ppm of chlorine can be reduced significantly when electrically energizing the water...

Usually, the lower the pH, the higher the ORP, but not necessarily related as the two numbers in relationship can be very different.

It's the minus ORP, or the Redox/Reduction end of the scale that is less well known or understood, or so it would seem. The Redox/Reduction is the power/energy/chi/life force to reduce oxidation molecules and the greater the minus value, the greater the ability to act as an anti-oxidant, bond with the singlet molecules and "reduce their oxidation potential" Basically, it's the reverse of the +ORP external oxidation allowing the energy to bond/neutralize the free radical (-ORP) and carry it out of the system as harmless fluid.

Here's a good example...toxic sodas i.e. Sprite and Coke and many commercial bottled water produts have an ORP of around +400 and a pH of 3 and up, give or take. Fresh orange juice has an ORP of around -200 with varying alkaline measurements. Canned orange juice has positive ORP...life force is pasteurized out, as it was meant to do.

I have one of these meters...it's sound science. Use "the Google along with the internets".

Remember when people thought it was crazy that moving water (hydropower) could light up their homes across little wires miles and miles away?

Well, join the 21st century "miracle"...electricity (electroysis..electrolyzing..ionization) can now empower water to heal, clean, disinfect, and ... god help Mansanto and the other poision manufacturers ... replace toxic chemicals to green up our lives.

It is for that reason it will not hit "mainstream", excuse the pun, until, like solar power or hydrogen power, the Big Guys and Girls at our have their hands on it and can control it.

I'm just now starting to do my own research on electrolyzed water and have to say it's very confusing...the info out there is vague to say the least. I can say from my own experience and what has propelled me to look further in the process has been the results I have seen from treating my Boston terrier with an electrolyzed water product. I have spent over a $1000 with a few vets trying to cure my dog of a recurring rash. She has been treated with every medication for ring-worm, bacterial infections and has gone through the allergy tests to figure out was wrong to no avail. The only thing that has worked has been treating her with the electrolized water for a little over week. I now continue to spray her under belly once a day for preventative maintanance and the results have been astounding!
I'm an avid mountain bike rider and treated my own scrapes and wounds with the product and have had great results. Sounds weird but I've actually sprayed one leg and left the other to heal all natural and the treated leg or shin healed up in a 1/3 of time.
I to thought, who would spend $30 on 8oz of water? Until, utimately I had too as a last result and I have been amazed. Thx Jeff
