FreeRice

It's a vocabulary test. For every word you get right, FreeRice donates 10 grains of rice to a hungry persons around the world. The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).

FreeRice automatically adjusts to your level of vocabulary. It starts by giving you words at different levels of difficulty and then, based on how you do, assigns you an approximate starting level. You then determine a more exact level for yourself as you play. When you get a word wrong, you go to an easier level.

There are 50 levels in all, but it is rare for people to get above level 48.

Got to 50 several times as well. It was fun, but I have to wonder how the donation thing works-- I certainly hope some poor aid organization isn't having to count out individual grains of rice.

Helping people in steps of $0.0001... Feeling good... No need whatsoever of moving your butt... How cute.

Go online banking and donate something. €0.1 will do. Sounds silly? In fact that's worth some 1,500 grains of rice.

got to 49 ...then with a lot of back-and-forth to 50 -- but it takes more correct answers to go up one level than the number of misses that drop you down. when you finally make it to 50 the words are things like "weeg" and the definitions are "indebtedness; probable;orphanage; distill" -- etc. the lower level words are much easier to move through because many of them are latin/greek in origin and one can puzzle out the derivation...and thus word meaning.

but, apparently it takes 1M grains to eqal 1Kilo of rice...

Got to 49 repeatedly. After that it is a matter of guessing which vague, wrong or just plain silly answer to pick.

It looks like the quiz was compiled by several people, some of whom know the words and their usages, and some of whom dipped randomly into a thesaurus in the time honoured manner of tabliod crossword compilers.

Got over 50 a few times.. Am an English language teacher and found some of the answers to words inaccurate (Can't think of any specific examples at the moment)
Site is addictive.. But also question whether the rice is being donated..Would be delighted to see some official reports.

BTW, I was wondering how many grains it takes to make 1 pound. WikiAnswers says it's 29,000. So as of Nov 19th, they've raised enough money for 45 tons of rice (2000 lbs each). On Nov 18th, 171 million grains translates to almost 3 tons (5,892 pounds). Minor compared with the need, but not insignificant.

If the growth continues at all on the rate it's going, it could turn into a significant amount.

Also, check the Wikipedia entry for more info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeRice

I got to level 41 in a minute or less and only donated something like 140 grains of rice. I'm not anyone special, like a teacher or someone who knows latin. I didn't look up the words in a dictionary, and I'm still in school. Is that odd? :S
