Strand Books' Books by the Foot specializes in designing impressive-looking bookshelves and libraries.

We assemble decorator collections in any subject, including art, biography, reference, law, music, theater and classic literature. We've put together libraries for hundreds of clients, including the Plaza hotel, Steven Spielberg, and Polo Ralph Lauren. Working with you, we will custom design a library that is sure to be a perfect match for any home or office space, one that will please the eye and satisfy the mind.

This collection to the left, made from antique leather books mostly in French, Spanish, and German, from the 19th century, with gold tooling - perfect to showcase your erudition - will set you back $300 per linear foot. Reading not required.

How can this be "Neatorama?" We were looking for bookshelves for all the books we have and love. People buy books for decor? Hellinahandbasket I say. This is beyond sad. I am embarrassed for our culture.

Jeeze if you're not even going to read the books, at least try to save some money... $300 a foot (and that's for foreign languages. English is $400) is expensive!

If you live in Oregon, Every year EOU (eastern Oregon University) hosts a MASSIVE book sale, its put on by AAUW and proceeds go to help a lot of causes.

I've gotten a LOT of old books in beautiful condition there, for as little as a 10-25¢ each. Local libraries often also have such sales. Random old books are cheap and commonplace.

Now... if you're a true bibliophile, then (like me)you have specific titles and editions in mind and that gets more challenging. But as some bibliophiles might agree, sometimes its the hunt that I enjoy more than the book.
