Probably was trying to crawl out. When archaeologists first excavated Pompeii they kept finding holes filled with bones. Someone thought to try filling the hole with plaster and discovered that the volcanic ash had frozen the position of people as they died. There was an exhibit of these casts that toured various museums. The saddest I remember was a mother trying to cover her baby.

Lea's right. This is a plaster cast of a hole left by a body that was buried in ash by the volcano. The hole was created once the body decomposed.
The person was not trying to crawl. That's simply the position he was in when he died.
Many people died with their arms protecting their faces - they were asphyxiating, after all.

It's really creepy to see the ones that are still at Pompeii. There's a group of (casts of) people huddled behind a wall that was between them and the volcano. When we went, the creepiness was escalated by the fact that it was deserted and rainy, and thunder rumbled in the distance. Very sad, but really interesting stuff.

No. Not uh! there is no way that people were covered by this stuff. I mean there is a picture of people in cases. How do we know you just didn't make them yourself? THINK ABOUT THAT!

OMG THIS IS SO CRAZY. I AM SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO STUPID NOT TO KNOW THIS. WHAT THE HELL I AM STUPID ANYWAY. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAG TWO PLUS TWO EQUALS. AND IT TOOK ME THREE HOURS JUST TO WRITE THIS.
