Author Flannery O'Connor On Why We Find The Grotesque So Appealing

(Image Link)

Those of us who enjoy grotesquerie don't question why we like the dark side, and even though we could probably be psychologically profiled according to our morbid tastes we don't worry about issues of sanity.

There's nothing wrong with having morbid or grotesque interests, so long as you don't harm the living, and being fascinated by death and other freaky stuff is a very normal part of human life.

Author Flannery O'Connor discussed why writers are fascinated with the grotesque in her essay from 1960 Some Aspects of the Grotesque in Southern Fiction, focusing largely on differences in morbid tastes between Northern and Southern authors.

Here's a few snippets from this enlightening essay:

In these grotesque works, we find that the writer has made alive some experience which we are not accustomed to observe every day, or which the ordinary man may never experience in his ordinary life.

Whenever I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one. To be able to recognize a freak, you have to have some conception of the whole man, and in the South the general conception of man is still, in the main, theological.

All Signs Point To Spoon - Don't Tick Puddy Off!

All Signs Point To Spoon by Pixhunter

The Tick had been hanging out with a bunch of apartment dwelling weirdos since he'd given up his crime fighting ways, and as soon as he started dating the one they call Elaine he adopted the pseudonym "Puddy". His new name sounded funny and cool at the same time, which was quite the opposite of Arthur, and his new name came with certain perks like face painting at hockey games, the ability to install a garbage disposal unit in a shower and a really cool Eight Ball jacket. Elaine hated the jacket, but Tick didn't care because he knew he could give up this sitcom life at any time and return to fighting crime, with the first name on his criminal hit list belonging to a hipster dufus named Kramer...

Bring home Seinfeld like you've never seen it before on this All Signs Point To Spoon t-shirt by Pixhunter, it's all spoony and eight bally and sure to get you lots of love from your fellow fans!

Marvel movies are heading in a whole new dramatic direction with the advent of Civil War in the Marvel Universe starting with Captain America: Civil War, but good guys at odds with each other seems unheroic to say the least.

How Architects Draw The Human Figure

To become an architect you need to have strong perspective, design and geometric drawing skills, just to name a few, but architects really don't need to know much about drawing the human figure.

Anatomy is an entirely different realm of artistic knowledge, so illustrators who focus their energy on specialization in architectural forms tend to let their figure drawing skills fade away.

But architects still retain knowledge of drawing the human form, and often include little doodles of people in their architectural renderings to establish scale, doodles that often reflect their artistic style.

New York-based architectural designer Noor Makkiya has put together a collection of 21 drawings of the human form by famous architects, from the super simple shapes of SANAA to the sketchy geometry of Frank Gehry.

It's interesting to see how much of each architect's personal sense of style can be reflected in a simple doodle of a person, and how each artist truly has their own distinct approach to form construction.

The Internet Reacts To Baby Born With Full Head Of Hair

This is Isabelle Kaplan and her mom Mackenzie:

As you can see Isabelle was born with a full head of hair, which made her quite famous on the interwebs when Mackenzie's cousin posted the pic to Reddit.

But as we all know there are Photoshoppers galore on Reddit, and before she could blink her pretty little eyes the Photoshopping had begun and Isabelle could dance like her hair hero Elvis.

(Image Link)

Since the cousin who posted the pic remarked that Isabelle had "news anchor hair" this delightful travesty happened:

Once she shaved the 'stache she wound up playing for millions in Las Vegas, but Isabelle doesn't need help from Photoshop to have a bright future because she's already a star!

The Ultimate 80s Cartoon Intro

80s cartoons had a very distinct look, especially in regards to the intro sequence, and there are so many obvious similarities between shows that you could easily clip them all together into one amazing mega-show.

But licensing forbids different pop culture franchises from commingling, so we'll just have to watch the Best 80s Cartoon Intro by Jared Jeffries and imagine the ridiculous possibilities. (NSFW due to language)

Jared's ultimate intro demonstrates how important it is to give your characters a name that fits their personality, like Abra Kabastard.

Fact Checking The People V. O.J. Simpson

The FX original series The People v. O.J. Simpson has everyone talking about the OJ Simpson trial once again, and despite the show's added drama and intense performances it's as well researched as you get when it comes to crime shows.

That's because the series is based on a thoroughly researched book by Jeffrey Toobin called The Run Of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, which shows what the people surrounding the trial were going through as well.

Take Robert Kardashian for example- the show is playing up his daughters for obvious reasons, but they're not really taking liberties when they show Rob idol worshipping OJ, nor is the part about OJ threatening to commit suicide in Kim's bedroom made up.

(YouTube Link)

But the beef between attorneys Robert Shapiro and Johnnie Cochran is a bit of a stretch, because during the trial the real beef was between old friends Shapiro and Bailey, as Shapiro felt betrayed by his mentor.

Chimichanganesh - The Gods Must Be Crazy

Chimichanganesh by Dicky The Darkwraith

Wade has had some pretty crazy ideas run through his chem befuddled brain over the years, but his idea to become a Hindu god has to be among his craziest. The scheme involved having a few more sets of arms attached to his body and having a sunny glow injected straight into his skin with radiation, but as the doctors were completing the project Deadpool slipped into unconsciousness and began to dream about what it would be like to play god. His girlfriend Death visited him in the dream and told him that the big guys and gals upstairs weren't too happy with his scheme, and that they had a fate worse than death and regeneration waiting for him in the afterlife, at which point he came to and started tearing off those extra arms....

Trying On 24 Different Pairs Of Jeans And Comparing The Results

I've always assumed men's clothes, especially jeans, fit truer to size than women's clothes, but it appears that was an outdated assumption because the brands of today couldn't be more different.

The trendy styles that dominate the market make finding a pair of jeans that fit right a total gamble for guys like BuzzFeed staff writer Mathew Jedeikin, but he wasn't going to give up until he'd compared a few dozen pairs.

His research revealed, among other things, that dark washes tend to run a bit bigger than light, and Banana Republic jeans fit truest to size overall.

Here's What Happened When I Tried On 24 Different Pairs Of Men's Jeans In The Same Size

Weird Arby's Employee Reacts To Car Crashing Into Restaurant

When a little old lady crashes into the side of an Arby's restaurant, sending diners flying across the restaurant, you'd better believe the news cameras are going to show up and employees are going to react.

But one employee took his reaction to another level when "interviewed" by the local news, waxing poetic about the "champagne colored Toyota Avalon crashing into my world like DMB circa 1996".

(NSFW due to language)

(YouTube Link)

Okay, so the guy in the video isn't really an Arby's employee, he's just a passionate news actor named Andrew Bowser who just happens to own an Arby's uniform for some reason. Maybe he was actually interviewing for a job?

Abandoned Hotels Make The Egyptian Desert Look Like Another Planet

Filmmakers who need a camera ready location for their next sci-fi flick should head to the Egyptian desert, because the abandoned hotels jutting out of the sand make the region look like the surface of another world.

The hotels were designed by German artists Sabina Haubitz and Stefanie Zoche, and construction began but never got past the frame stage due to misinvested tourism funds.

Now these far out building frames are just hanging out in the Egyptian desert waiting to be used as film sets, photo shoot backgrounds and locations in video games.

Guy Makes Bow And Arrows Without Using Any Modern Tools

Survival skills tend to revolve around finding three main things- food, water and shelter.

When you need the energy to build a shelter or haul a supply of water up from the river then food becomes more important than the rest, and nothing helped primitive people catch food like the bow and arrow.

Nowadays we take the bowyer's and fletcher's skills for granted, unaware of how hard it is to make a bow and arrows without the aid of modern tools until we see a demonstration of the entire process.

(YouTube Link)

Primitive Technology has some serious skills so he makes the process look pretty easy, and he provided a full description of the materials used, and how he used said materials, in the video's description.

Clever Photos Taken By Immature Tourists

Traveling is supposed to be fun and relaxing, a time for the traveler to discover a new place and let loose a bit so they can return to the daily grind relatively stress free.

But letting loose a bit and letting it all hang out are two entirely different things, so it's important to know where the line of decency is at all times so you don't jump right over it with both feet.

Acting the fool while traveling is the easiest way to give your native country a bad name, so try to keep your tongue in your mouth when visiting Egypt because they really don't like it when people make out with the Sphinx.
