Watch A Jet's Autopilot Kick In And Save Unconscious Pilot's Life

A jet's autopilot function seems like something the pilot hopes they never have to use, but when the s#$t hits the turbine and a pilot ends up unconscious they're glad the autopilot is there.

This recently declassified Air Force video shows heads-up display footage as an F-16 pilot is saved from a fiery death by the jet's Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System

(YouTube Link)

Aviation Week reports on what's happening in this video:

the F-16 student pilot started to pull up for a barrel roll, but was forced into a G-induced loss of consciousness half-way through the maneuver. At an altitude of 5,180 meters (17,000 feet), the jet then began to drop nose-first at an angle of 55 degrees. Within seconds, it had dropped to just 2,670 meters (8,760 feet). At the fastest point of descent, the jet was traveling at 1,210 kilometers (750 miles) per hour – only marginally less than supersonic speeds.

Just as the fate of the pilot seemed doomed, the aircraft’s Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System kicks in, causing the jet to swoop upright and regain control, seen in the video around the 0:32 minute mark. This is the fourth time this technology has saved an aircraft.

Photos Showing Just How Overcrowded China Has Become

Hearing how overcrowded it is in China and seeing it in pictures are two different things, because nothing registers the meaning of the word "overcrowded" quite like a photo.

China is currently home to a staggering 1.3 billion people, a number which is growing rapidly since they dropped the "one child per family" laws established in the 1970s.

But it has only been a year or so since they dropped this policy so it's still unclear whether societal balance will be restored when more boys and girls are born in China.

However, if it works to restore balance between young and old and man and woman China could once again rise to its former glory as a society, only this time there will be a hell of a lot more people trying to live in the same amount of space.

Every Dystopian Young Adult Novel

Why are Young Adult novels so popular with young and old alike these days? Because of the formula- sexy plus pitiful plus surprisingly powerful equals dystopian hero born to save us all.

Add in a dash of the supernatural, some silly yet memorable names and a pinch of peril and you've got a formulaic story for the masses.

Prefer pictures to word problems? You can thank Adam Ellis for his illustrated breakdown of Every Dystopian YA Novel, which he posted on his site Books Of Adam. I wonder how he cracked the code?

Goodnight Newt - Don't Let The Space Bugs Bite...

Goodnight Newt by manoystee

Ripley kissed Newt on the forehead and whispered "goodnight Newt", and Newt let out a satisfied coo because she felt comforted by Ripley's presence and receiving affection made her feel human again. But she knew she'd get no sleep tonight, because the nightmares were now real and Newt had seen too much to sleep comfortably ever again. Every time she closed her eyes she swore she could smell the xenomorph's strangely sweet scent and feel its breath upon her face, and so she'd open her eyes again and hope to one day be able to sleep without dreaming about murderous alien beings...

ARS LONGA VITA BREVIS by Medusa Dollmaker

Creating art is a challenge, and making a living as an artist is even more of a challenge as you struggle to find paying clients, create something they like and collect your pay from them. But the payoff is the creation of a work which will live much longer than we will, our visual contribution to the future. Artists should therefore band together and stand united under a crested banner which reflects their eternal struggle to visually appeal, with the crest stating "life is short, but art prevails".

The Strangest Things People Have Seen Through Home Windows

If you're spying through windows when the curtains or blinds are drawn then shame on you for peeping, but if the curtains are open and people are doing freaky stuff by the window they clearly don't care about privacy, or they want you to see.

That's most likely the case when you spot "a woman wearing black leather walking her ‘dog’ – a guy on a leash!" with their windows wide open, but your neighbor who keeps owls probably didn't want you to see this:

“My neighbour is a bit of an eccentric man. I always knew he kept owls, but I didn’t know they lived in his house with him until I spotted him eating breakfast one morning with a large owl perched on top of his head. The best part was he looked quite unfazed by the whole thing.”

Window blind manufacturer English Blinds asked their customers "whether they’d ever seen anything strange through a home window", and the results were so colorful they hired Paul Blow to illustrate their top 6 picks.

Weighing in at number one:

“The best thing I’ve ever seen through a window was when I saw a lady weighing a single boob on a set of kitchen scales. Not sure what recipe it was for!”

Ramon The Fast Talking Squirrel Thanks Human For Snack

Squirrels are chatty little critters, but they don't talk much around humans because they're afraid of being captured or killed, that is, until a human becomes their best friend by giving them food.

Then that human gets to hear the funny way a squirrel expresses its gratitude- in a strange, nasal kind of voice that almost sounds like words we can understand.

(YouTube Link)

K. John Stewart provided the voice over squirrel translation in this video, but Ramon the squirrel would like everyone to know that K.'s translation is correct. Here's the transcript:

Hello there, I am a fat little squirrel sitting on your porch. Thank you very much for giving me these delicious walnuts. I like them very much. You are a nice person. I will be sure to come back tomorrow to get some more walnuts. You are my favorite person in the neighborhood. I like you like you love you…

Mighty Fierce Facts About The Aztecs

(Image Link)

We've all heard stories of the Aztecs getting snowed out of their golden fortune by Spanish Conquistadors led by Hernan Cortes in the early 16th century, and we've heard tales of ritual sacrifice, cannibalism and infanticide.

But unless you've studied the Aztecs you're probably a bit hazy about many aspects of their warrior society, wondering where the myths end and the true (hi)story begins.

Aztecs were undisputably badass on the battlefield, and they employed psychological tactics in battle as well as a massive Macuahuitl, basically a cricket bat with obsidian blades mounted on both sides.

According to a Spanish report an Aztec warrior was able to cut off a horse's head with this fearsome weapon, a fact which was recently proven true on the show The Deadliest Warrior.

The Aztecs also wore animal inspired armor and made a racket with drums and savage screams to strike terror into the hearts of their enemies, hoping to make them scatter in battle.

But despite their fearsome tactics and reports of their bloodlust the Aztecs preferred to take prisoners rather than kill in battle, because it takes more skill to imprison a soldier.

Plus, this meant the Aztecs would have more warriors to sacrifice to their massive pantheon of gods...

66 Shelters You Can Make With A Tarp

There are many tips and tutorials online that teach survivalism skills, but for my money the one-sheeters are the best because you can actually print them out and take them with you.

Take this handy dandy illustrated chart for example- it's about a sheet and a half in length yet shows a whopping 66 different shelters you can make using a simple tarp.

(Image Link)

This sheet could be a life saver if you're ever out roughing it for reals and the rain starts to fall, but these tarp shelter formations could also come in handy at the park or in the backyard.

WARDROBE CHANGE - Censorship Is A Slap In The Face

WARDROBE CHANGE by KARMADESIGNER

Wade heard about some silly meme online that the kids were going crazy for, so he had to check it out for himself. The meme was called the Batslap, and even though it took place in another dimension known as DC the raw brutality and LOL hilarity spoke to DP on a deeper level. He proceeded to turn his life into the living embodiment of the Batslap, smacking people across the face before they could finish a sentence. It really knocked 'em dead at first, but people quickly grew tired of being smacked about by that silly merc with a mouth so they called out to DC for help...and a guy in a batty cowl and cape answered...

Warn the world about the danger of getting meme-y with DP by wearing this WARDROBE CHANGE t-shirt by KARMADESIGNER, it'll help you put a smile on people's faces without resorting to physical violence!

Lust Vs. Love - Illustrated

It's easy for the lines between love and lust to become blurred when a relationship is fresh, because a racing pulse and that tickle in your stomach feels the same whether you're doing it or simply doting on your new partner.

Both love and lust make people act crazy, but being in love means accepting you're both crazy so you might as well share your craziness with each other.

Cartoonist Karina Farek has drawn up some likely scenarios to demonstrate the difference between love and lust, which has less to do with the amount of time spent in bed than you'd think.

These People Are Totally Fed Up With Pokemon GO

I'm sure anyone who doesn't play Pokémon GO is sick of hearing about it by now, because stories about GO are an inescapable part of internet life these days.

But folks who hate GO should probably keep their opinions to themselves or risk bringing all kinds of Pokéhate from a world full of wanna-be trainers down upon their head.

It appears some people are so fed up with Pokémon GO players they're willing to risk being hated so they can grump and groan about the game they don't understand.

Maybe the haters would be better off simply accepting that Pokémon GO isn't their idea of a good time and letting the hatred GO before they get Frozen out by their Poké-lovin' friends.

Former Janitor Collects And Photographs Items Siezed From Immigrants

The stuff we carry around in our bags, purses and pockets when we leave the house says a lot about who we are, where we come from, and our standing in society.

So imagine what all the stuff carried by immigrants says about them, their bags full of typical travel supplies plus all the prized possessions they've brought with them to start their new lives.

These possessions are then unceremoniously tossed in the trash when the immigrant is detained by the U.S. Border Patrol, the story of an immigrant's journey tossed like used tissue.

Photographer Thomas Kiefer used to work as a janitor at the U.S. Customs office in Ajo, Arizona, whre he saw all of the "non-essential" items carried by illegal immigrants thrown away like trash.

Thomas felt it was a shame that those items were tossed out in such a way, so he rescued them from the garbage and started taking pictures of the items he'd collected.

Individually the items photographed for Thomas' series El Sueno Americano don't say much, but together on the table they tell a story about individuals willing to risk it all in search of a better life.

A Star Wars Themed Creperie In Paris

Creperia Nerd, pena que acabei de almoçar. Não vai dar para experimentar desta vez. #paris #odyssey

A photo posted by Daniel Matsuura Mearim (@dmearim) on Oct 1, 2015 at 5:55am PDT

Star Wars fandom is a global phenomenon, and at this point it's plain to see the world is just as fond of the franchise as we are here in the United States.

So why is it so surprising to see a Star Wars themed creperie in Paris?

#starwars #themedrestaurant #paris #geek

A video posted by Anemie MissCrafty (@missanemie) on Feb 27, 2016 at 2:29pm PST

Because we're talking about Paris, the city seemingly too fashionable, gourmet and highbrow to play host to a theme restaurant, much less one based on a geeky franchise like Star Wars.

But Odyssey creperie, nicknamed Cafe Nerd, is every bit as Parisian as the rest, and according to visitors the sci-fi themed crepes and ice cream sundaes they serve up are dangerously delicious.

Odyssey is located on Rue Dante near Notre Dame, and even though the decor is totally Star Wars their menu is sci-fi inclusive, with nods to Star Trek, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica.
