This Conference Table Is Loopy

Michael Beitz warps reality with his surreal sculptures, such as a liquefying picnic table and a wall that literally has an ear. One of his recent works is Not Now, an enormous conference table that loops in the center. That may be occasionally inconvenient in an office environment. But there are some meetings in which it could be handy.

Dive Bomber Squirrel Attacks Bird Feeder

(Video Link)

You can almost see the thought processes inside the squirrel's mind. The bird feeder has a built-in dome to protect it from squirrels climbing the shaft. The solution is to find a position high enough but also close enough to make a death-from-above leap onto the bird feeder.

13 Things You Might Not Know About Super Mario Bros 3

Super Mario Bros 3 quickly became a fan favorite when it came out in 1988 because of one main thing- the Tanooki Suit! The addition of a suit that allowed Mario to glide through the air and look like a cute raccoon at the same time made gamers grin with glee, and gave Mario a unique sense of style he never had before.

The Frog and Hammer suits are pretty cool too, but did you know Mario was originally going to have access to a Centaur suit?

Apparently the game designers felt Mario dressed up like a raccoon and a frog was all the horsing around gamers could handle! *kneeslapper*

Woman Discovers Spider Cocoon In A Bag Of Bananas

Every bunch of bananas takes a mighty long trip to get to its final destination, and sometimes little critters hitch a ride like creepy crawly little stowaways aboard the SS Banana, taking them to see faraway lands...like Wales.

A man from Wales recently picked up a bag of banana from his local Tesco supermarket and brought a severe case of arachnophobia home for his wife.

She opened the bag of bananas and discovered to her horror that the bag held a cocoon full of spider stowaways- Brazilian Wandering Spiders, which look like this when full grown:

The Brazilian Wandering Spiders, or Banana Spiders as they’re commonly know, are considered the “world’s most venomous spider”, and their venom is known to cause painful erections that last far longer than a dose of Viagra.

The spiders started to hatch right before her eyes, so she threwthe bag in the freezer and called Tesco for some answers. The company requested she return the cocoon and fruit to the store so they could be investigated, still no word on whether the husband kept a few of the spiders around for the couple's next date night.

Does Doctor Who Pass The Bechdel Test?

The Doctor has been assisted by some mighty fierce female companions over the last five decades, and Doctor Who has helped make strong female characters into a sci-fi staple. But does Doctor Who, with all of his powerful female friends, pass the Bechdel test?

The Mary Sue’s Sarah Barrett decided to find out how the 21st century episodes of the show rate according to the Bechdel test, and not surprisingly it scored a pretty darn high 80%!

Graphic One contains data per series, per writer, per showrunner and per companion, while Graphic Two contains data color-coded data per episode (click links to see full size versions)

The Bechdel test is an extremely simplified way to determine whether a show or movie contains gender bias, but it’s an entertainment type test used on entertainment type stuff, so just go with it!

Finally Salad Looks Fun to Eat

Salads are good for you, but they are rarely fun and exciting. But thanks to the modern miracle of 3D printers, that may very well change soon. That's Nerdalicious reports that Food Designer Chloé Rutzerveld created these clever 3D printed crackers that have living organisms inside the pod, such as seeds, spores and yeast on the inside. These organisms sprout and grow a living, miniature salad within three to four days of the printing.

It could still be a decade before these make their way to your dinner plates, but we're loving the idea of a salad hidden within the walls of a fresh cracker.

8th Graders Build Frozen-Themed Prosthetic Hand for a Little Girl

The Deer Creek Intermediate School in St. Francis, Wisconsin has a robotics team. Its equipment includes a 3D printer. The members learned about Ariah, a little girl in California who was born without most of her right hand. They decided to print an articulated prosthetic hand for her.

But it was no ordinary prosthetic hand. The team members decorated it with colors and images from the Ariah's favorite movie, Frozen. The Huffington Post reports:

With the guidance of their teacher, Peter Graven, they chose color combinations and added snowflakes to the design. To top it all off, they put “Queen Ariah” across the hand.

Later, they got to view an online video of Ariah using her new Frozen hand.

Springfield, Illinois Gives Cobra Commander the Key to the City

Inexplicably, the capital city of Illinois surrendered to Cobra, the terrorist organization from the G.I. Joe entertainment franchise. Why? Did Cobra Commander have dirt on Mayor J. Michael Houston? Did he offer Houston greater power after Cobra's conquest of the Midwest?

Officially, Mayor Houston gave Cobra Commander the key to the city in order to welcome visitors to G.I. Joecon, a fan convention assembling in Springfield from April 9-12. Still, this seems like a drastic and short-sighted move to get tourism dollars.

It does, however, speak well of Cobra Commander's leadership. In the past, he's failed in one violent venture after another. Perhaps he has learned that victory lies not in naked force, but by subverting pre-existing political structures. The press release quotes Cobra Commander demonstrating his now more conciliatory approach:

Springfielders near and far, I accept your Mayor’s generous gift. And let it be known that I too bring a gift for every man, woman and child of this city that is so near and dear to my heart; an invitation to join with me. Join Cobra!”
