My grandfather worked in the canneries in San Jose, CA from the early 20's until retirement as plant supervisor in the late 60's. He would never eat ketchup because he saw the dropped tomatoes swept up and used to make it. I sure hope by the time I was old enough to eat ketchup, the health dept. has implemented rules about that sort of thing. But you never know.

I have a coat that has a quote sewn in the outer pocket. Can't remember what the quote is at the moment, something about adventure.

While the recipes are very similar, to me, butter tarts are not quite pecan pies without pecans, almost as much as chess pie is not quite pecan pie without pecans.

My mom (not Canadian) used to make these, but she called them "tassies." No idea where she originally found the recipe.

I wonder if there is any way to investigate these stories using modern DNA analysis. Certainly would be a challenge for some enterprising scientist.

I remember, when I was much younger (I'm in my 60's), a number of medical experts and doctors declaiming the same thing-no one needs to take vitamins. Then, someone did a survey of doctors and such, and guess what folks? It turned out that a whole bunch of them took vitamins. And their excuses? Oh, they knew HOW to take them. THEY had stressful lives and didn't always eat right (like the rest of us). One of them, a Dr. Lendon Smith, used to pop up on the talk shows and run the 'you don't need vitamins, I'm an expert, I KNOW' line every time. After that survey came forth, Ol' Doc Smith came out with his OWN brand of vitamins. Thanks, I'll take my vitamins...it's my money, so stop pretending that you want to help me save it....so you can get more of it.

"Half of those flips weren't even necessary!" But they were enjoyable to watch. Flipping in a dinosaur suit is even more impressive to see.

And while we are at it, I wonder which genius decided to cajole Freund into working on The Lucy Show, I am betting it was Desi.
