We used to teach financial literacy, nutrition, and civics in schools. Those were done away with in the rush to concentrate on reading and math, which are more easily tested. Kids used to learn communication and emotional intelligence from their large families, including many siblings, grandparents, and cousins.

The part about little kids having trouble with the phonemes reminds me of a funny exchange between my two daughters while leaving Grandma's house.

Some of us are old enough to remember when all computer text was green ascii on a black background. We were jubilant when we finally got to look at something that reembled a real book or newspaper.
