Fascinating research, but the results are not all that surprising. Conquered people do not generally have the wherewithal to up and leave the country if they don't like their new overlords. And Britain isn't exactly heralded for its class mobility in the centuries since.
My mom collected Green Stamps when I was a kid. Then in the '80s, I shopped at a grocery that used them, which was so weird by then that I started collecting them myself out of nostalgia. I got some nice small appliances, but I don't recall exactly what ones.
Things are so different now. My dorm had 260 girls, one TV, three channels. No one watched it much. We had at least a dozen phones, one at end of each hall, but a call had to go through the school switchboard, so they could make sure we paid for any long-distance calls.
Not too worried... we have five TVs at home, and she doesn't watch them. The youngest, on the other hand, watches TV constantly. And still aces her classes. She will eventually reach her limit on multitasking.
I've had two Mac Minis. The second one the kids are using now, even though it's totally obsolete. Not a bad deal, considering the price, but a student really needs a portable to take to class.
Yeah, she's considering graphic design. Sigh. I tried to warn her against an art degree, but my brother got one and now makes a decent living as a graphic artist. She doesn't play games much. I'd just as soon she not watch TV, but all schools now seem to have campus-wide cable and wi-fi.
I assumed it would be a Mac laptop, but there are quite a few models with different features. I've used Macs for about 30 years now, but I've never owned a laptop. And she's been accepted to six schools, but is waiting for financial aid before deciding. Yes, everything is up in the air!
