The German POWs of Texas

Between 1943 and 1945, captured German soldiers were often sent to POW camps in the U.S. because, well, Britain and most of Europe was pretty torn up and not equipped to feed or house them. Many ended up in Texas, where they were offered the chance to work outside the camps and generally lived better than they would have elsewhere.

Camp Huntsville was the first to be set up in Texas. Construction across 837 acres took place for nearly a year, and its 400 buildings were ready for occupancy by the spring of 1943. Texas would eventually see twice as many camps (with a total of 78,000 occupants) as any other state, and for a simple reason: the Geneva Convention of 1929 specified that POWs must be placed in a similar climate as the one they were captured in. Because so many Germans surrendered in North Africa and lacked clothing or supplies for colder weather, many were sent to Texas.

The curiosity of locals quickly gave way to resentment. Even though these men had orders to kill brothers, fathers, and friends, accommodations in Huntsville and other camps were surprisingly comfortable. Prisoners were allowed to sunbathe, play soccer, and stretch out in 40 square feet of personal space with sheets and blankets. (Officers got 120 square feet.) Food was fresh and showers were warm. College credits earned would count at universities back in Germany. They even got bottles of beer.

It certainly beat getting killed in battle or being captured by the Soviets. Some of those prisoners worked hard to become American citizens after the war. Read about the World War II POW camps in Texas at mental_floss.

Juno the Beluga Whale

Juno is one of three Beluga whales who live at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. He learned a long time ago that it’s a real hoot to scare the kids who come up to the glass to look at him. But then again, he probably goes up to the glass to get a good look at those strange creatures on the other side. Juno can be friendly at times, and doesn’t mind to have a picture taken with you. -via reddit

MTV Cribs Nursery Tour

Bryan and Caryn Canatella are expecting a little girl, and the nursery is stocked. Bryan takes us on the grand tour, in the style of the TV show MTV Cribs.

Those who are familiar with the show find it spot-on, and those of us who don’t watch the show find it funny on its own merits. “… while she’s sitting’ on swans. SWANS!” Baby Cecilia has the perfect place to come home to, including parents with a sense of humor. -via Buzzfeed

Robot Chicken DC Comics Special 3: Magical Friendship

Robot Chicken’s third DC Comics special is coming to Adult Swim this fall. If the full show is anything like the preview here, it’s going to be insane.

It explores the multiverse theory, and crosses over with other universes, so that we see different versions of our favorite superheroes. Seeing a different version of yourself can be pretty unnerving. Especially if you’re an ape. -via Uproxx

Kids Prefer Personal Devices Over TV, Dessert

My little brother once had a memorable meltdown because he couldn’t see his favorite TV show as it didn’t come on for a few more hours. That was in 1963. Thirty years later, he found his own children were completely used to picking out what TV shows or movies to watch on their own time, as many times as they wanted, on home video. Now the next generation uses hand-held devices to not only watch what they want at any time, but to play games, find new entertainment, and interact with friends -instead of the people in the same room with them. Miner & Co. Studio conducted research on the viewing habits of children, and have shared their findings.

Mobile devices are so popular with kids that nearly half of the 800 parents quizzed by Miner & Co. reported that they confiscate their kids' tablets when they act up and make them watch TV instead, thereby fostering a sort of Pavlovian response that equates TV with punishment. (That these parents simply don't restrict their kids' access to video altogether when they misbehave suggests that they're raising a generation of spoiled content junkies, but that's another story.)

Some kids are so obsessed with the small screen that they'll even forego treats for another few minutes with their portable video device. When given the choice between spending quality time with the tablet or having dessert, 41% of the parents surveyed said their kids would pick the screen over the snack.

These findings may explain the drop in Nielsen ratings for children’s television shows this year. You can read more about the study at Ad Age, and see the accompanying video here. What I’d like to see is a study that contrasts these results with families in which children do not own their own tablets and smartphones. Considering the costs, there are surely many families like that still around.

Brace Yourself (for Cute): It's Panda Cub Daycare

These sweet baby panda photos were captured at the Chengdu Research Base in China, a place where there's no shortage of cute around every corner. The facility also plays a huge role in the well-being of this highly endangered species.

Shown here are photos of their breeding center and nursery. With a species whose total head count is thought to be as low as 1,864, each birth that occurs and is subsequently nurtured there is precious. Female adult pandas only breed for two to three days a year, and they give birth to one cub every two years.

How To Put A Rubik's Cube Inside A Bottle

Completing a Rubik’s cube in under a certain amount of time was a pretty big deal back in the 80s, but nowadays we know better than to get all excited about toy cube based skills.

However, many of us still get mighty excited about the world of geeky home décor, and it doesn’t get much better than retro themes for the otherwise totally modern home.

You know what looks really retro cool when it hangs around your house? A Rubik’s cube in a beaker, bottle or any other place where it seems to be an impossible fit, that's what!

Putting a Rubik’s cube in a bottle is a much better use for that maddening puzzle, and it's a retro geek chic conversation piece that may convince some people you’re a wizard.

YouTuber Mathologer has created this instructional video that’s teaches you how to take a modern Rubik's cube apart and put it together again inside a bottle. It may not be the easiest project in the world, but the end results are purely mathe-magical!

Timber Wolf

This is Olav the Wolf, a sculpture made from scrap lumber by Copenhagen artist Thomas Dambo (previously at Neatorama). It was commissioned for the Copenhell 2015 music festival. They asked him to make a large, evil wolf, so he made it appear as if it were emerging from the underworld- and named it after a friend who helped him build it. The sculpture had lights inside, so it glowed red during the entire festival. Then by tradition, it was torched on the final night of the festival.

You can see pictures of Olav’s construction and the festival at Dambo’s website. -via reddit

Fight Traffic Ticket with Grammar!

Andrea Cammalleri of Middletown, Ohio, fought the law ... with a comma and the comma won!

Cammalleri got a traffic ticket back in 2014 in the village of West Jefferso when she parked her pickup truck in a zone that prohibited parking there for longer than 24 hours. The Ohio woman pointed out that the law stated that the types of car that couldn't be parked included "motor vehicle camper" not "motor vehicle, camper" so her pickup truck clearly didn't qualify.

The town's attorney argued that the law's meaning was clear in context, but the judge ruled for Cammalleri. Score 1 for grammar!

So the next time someone said to you that grammar doesn't matter, tell 'em that you can use it to fight traffic tickets!

Which Leaf is the Drawing and Which Are Real?

One of these leaves ain't like the others! Norway-based artist Dino Tomic of Atomic Circus drew a leaf so real that it's hard to distinguish the painting from the real stuff.

Can you guess which leaf is a pencil drawing?

See if you got the right answer:

Dog Learns the Joy of Jumping on the Bed

Loco the pit bull sees his girls having fun jumping on a mattress, and he wants to get in on the fun, too!

When you think about it, this dog has a great life: he’s got a mattress on the floor, two little girls to play with, and parents who are laid back about things like jumping on a mattress. What else could a puppy want? A T-bone, maybe? Then Loco’s life would be perfect! -via Daily Picks and Flicks

A Plethora Of Punny Tattoos

(Image Link)

People get tattooed for all kinds of reasons, including a love of art and as a , but those brave folk who get ink to entertain others are truly heroes. Funny tattoos come in many forms, but for my money the best kind of funny tattoo is a punny tattoo.

Punny tattoos are the ultimate in visual gag body art, a silly play on words or an idiom brought to life through design, and punny tattoo people are likely to become the life of the party!

Here's a collection of Tough, Raunchy (but totally SFW) and Just Plain Punny tattoos-

The Tough Tats-

Just because a tattoo is punny doesn't mean it loses all tough guy/gal appeal, there's plenty of room for wordplay and wickedness in a punny tattoo.

If you already spend your days pitying fools and buying giant gold chains then you might as well take Mr. Tea along for the ride.

(Image Link)

Scumbags and solid citizens alike will adore this Dead Beet tattoo, which is only to be worn by the proudly punny.

Are you a buff baker? There's an incredibly punny tattoo for that!
