When you go the Old Globe in London, they tell the story like this: Actors in days of yore were only allowed bow from the waist in 5th position. However, if they were recalled to the stage more than 3 times (or maybe 5 times?) they could break their back leg and take a deep bow. So, of course, it was a thing you'd want to achieve as an actor.
