Forget Elephants! Dolphins Have the Longest Memory

Forget elephants! A new study has shown that bottlenose dolphins have the longest memory in the animal kingdom.

Each bottlenose dolphin has a unique whistle that fuctions like a name. Research by Jason Bruck, animal behaviorist at the University of Chicago, shows that dolphins remember the unique whistles of other dolphins they've lived with, even after 20 years of separation.

Bruck got the idea for the study when he visited his family and was greeted by his brother's dog, who is usually wary of strangers. The dog remembered him from Bruck's last visit four years ago. That got him thinking, "How long do other animals remember each other?"

Dolphins, it turns out, are the perfect test subject. According to Christine Dell'Amore of National Geographic News:

[Bruck] collected data from 43 bottlenose dolphins at six facilities in the U.S. and Bermuda, members of a breeding consortium that has swapped dolphins for decades and kept careful records of each animal's social partners.

He first played recordings of lots of unfamiliar whistles to the dolphins in the study until the subjects got bored and stopped inspecting the underwater speaker making the sounds.

At this point, he played the whistles of the listening dolphins' old friends.

When the dolphins heard these familiar whistles, they would perk up and approach the speakers, often whistling their own name and listening for a response.

Furthermore, it seems like the dolphins actually enjoyed hearing whistles from their old friends. Bruck added that a set of cheeky young dolphins came up to him and whistled the names of other dolphins they wanted to hear next.

Shark at a Pub

Photo: Jimmy Agnew

Now where did I leave that shark?

You know it's Shark Week when people get so distracted with watching mockumentaries like Megalodon: The Monster Shark That Lives ("lives" here is interpreted very very very liberally, as Megalodon is actually extinct) that they just forgot where they left their sharks (on a train, maybe?)

Did you leave your shark in front of the Sea Dog Brew Pub on Nantucket, Massachusetts? Bar manager Jimmy Agnew wants to know! Perhaps he's just there to "meet his chums."

Banks Putting Humans Back Inside ATMs

So first they take out all the tellers in the banks and replace them with ATMs, then they complete the circle by putting humans back ... inside the ATMs!

New interactive ATMs by NCR lets customers interact with a live person on their ATMs through videochat. Banks claim that these machines are more convenient, faster and ... as a bonus, also safer. Willard Ross of Coastal Federal Credit Union in Raleigh, North Carolina, said that "robberies basically go away with this."

Herb Welsbaum of NBC News has the story.

4-Year-Old Boy Re-Elected as Mayor

So. What did you accomplish when you were four years old? Robert "Bobby" Tufts hasn't even made it to preschool yet but he's already been elected mayor. Twice!

According to the Politico, Bobby was only three years old when he won election for Mayor of the tiny town of Dorset, Minnesota, last year and he won again this year:

Mayor Tufts’ name was picked Sunday during annual Taste of Dorset festival to be mayor of Dorset for a second term. It has no formal city government and has a population of 22 to 28, depending on whether the minister and his family are in town.

Anyone could vote as many times as they like - for $1 a vote - at any of the ballot boxes in stores around town. The proceeds go toward organizing the festival.

After that, going to preschool must be a cinch!

Tree of Marie

Cat lover Diane Less Baird and dog lover Polly Wardle started a pet project called Angels for Animals out of their homes before they bought an abandoned slaughter house and converted it into a sanctuary for animals.

Inside the massive building is this gigantic "Tree of Marie" cat tree - a 24 foot high, $100,000 cat tree with 36 branches named after donor Marie Stillings. At each branches' ends are resting pods covered with green carpet that let cats lounge in style. It's currently the world's largest cat tree.

Doctor Who: Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor

The wait is over: BBC has announced in a live event that Peter Capaldi will star as the 12th Doctor in its hit sci-fi series Doctor Who.

Capaldi, a 55-year-old actor from Glasgow, will replace Matt Smith as the time-traveling Doctor. "It's wonderful not to keep this secret any longer," Capaldi said, "but it's been so fantastic ... For a while I couldn't tell my daughter who would be looking on the Internet and discovering that people have been saying so-and-so should be Doctor Who and she was getting rather upset that they never mentioned me."

Playing the Doctor will actually not be Capaldi's first time starring in the series. In 2008, he played Roman merchant Caecilius who escaped the eruption of Mount Vesuvius thanks to intervention by the Doctor in The Fires of Pompeii episode.

Lead writer and executive producer Steve Moffat, praised Capaldi as "One of the most talented actors of his generation [who is] about to play the best part on television."

Some Doctor Who fans, however, question why the current regeneration breaks the seemingly "ever younger" regeneration of the Doctor.

Drunk Man Wakes Up Without Penis

Men, if you ever passed out drunk and woke up to find your so-called-friends had taken unflattering photos, consider yourself lucky. At least you woke up ... uhm, "intact."

Not such luck for Geraldo Ramos. The 64-year-old man from Santiago, Dominican Republic, woke up after a night of heavy drinking without his penis. According to local TV station Noticisas Sin, neighbors told Ramos that he was attacked by a dog. Ramos, on the other hand, had no recollection that he was deprived of his manhood by man's best friend.

If indeed that was the case, it wouldn't be the first time in recent past that something like this happened - last month, a paralyzed man in Arkansas woke up to find his new puppy was snacking on him.

Regardless of who took his penis, Ramos considered the incident as a wake up call for him and planned to quit boozin' in the future.
