Documentary Pays Tribute To Detroit Graffiti Artist NEKST

(Video Link)

The city of Detroit has been home to a legendary graffiti art scene since the early days of aerosol art, so it’s not surprising that Detroit has been the focus of many documentaries about the outlaw art form.

Here's an indie documentary from MOCAtv called Building Detroit- Revok, Nekst, Pose that pays tribute to the artist known as NEKST, who started his artistic adventures in Houston and passed away in December 2012 of an overdose.

NEKST made friends and influenced the underground art world in cities across the globe, and in a city full of abandoned buildings just begging to be brightened up with a splash of spray painted color called Detroit his friends REVOK and POSE are going to make sure that his legacy lives on.

Anti-Smoking Animated Short Made By Disney In The 80s

(Video Link)

The ridiculous anti-smoking campaigns that air these days act like you’re a baby killing monster for wanting to smoke, but initially the anti-smoking PSAs took a gentler approach to getting people to quit- by telling them that they have a choice whether to smoke or not.

This animated short/PSA from 1981 is believed to have been made in New Zealand by Disney animator John Ewing and his company Freelance Animators Ltd, though it's uncertain because there aren't any studio credits attached to the film.

Smoking- The Choice Is Yours was made to appeal to adults and kids alike, showing us the dangers of smoking from the perspective of a cowpoke named Edgar, and unlike those awful Truth ads we're stuck with nowadays it skips the scare tactics in favor of some good old fashioned animated appeal.

Documentary Showcases Struggle Faced By Detroit Firefighters

(Video Link)

Detroit has had it rough over the last few decades, and between plant shutdowns resulting in massive job loss, crime running rampant and an overall economic crisis that's barely showing any sign of turning around the Motor City is in desperate need of a miracle.

However, those who chose to stay in their city, and fight for their city, have a lot of heart, and no one epitomizes the survival spirit of Detroit like the firefighters who battle arson on a daily basis using outdated equipment and expecting nothing in return for their bravery.

This documentary, entitled Detours, showcases the struggle Detroit's Highland Park firefighters face on a daily basis, and sheds some light on the serial arson problem which threatens to tear Detroit down from the inside.

Little Boy Learns That He'll Meet Iron Man, Cries When He Meets Robert Downey, Jr. Instead

Jaxson Denno was so excited when he learned that Iron Man was nearby and would be glad to meet him. Alas, he had been deceived. Only Iron Man actor Robert Downey, Jr. was available:

Only problem: Downey, in the Western Massachusetts towns of Sunderland and Shelburne Falls to shoot his latest, The Judge, was not wearing his Iron Man outfit.

That did not please Jaxson, as this photo shows.

Not to worry, though – Downey, 48, soon brought a smile to the boy's face.

"He was fine as soon as he talked to him," Jaxson's mother, Heather Denno, told PEOPLE, explaining that her young son "was so confused because I kept telling him it was Iron Man and he knew it wasn't. Well, not Iron Man in the suit."

RoboCop Statue Finally Heading to Detroit

It has taken more than two years of work, but Detroit, the city in which the movie RoboCop takes place, will finally get a statue of its favorite son:

The 10-foot tall statue that pays homage to a crime-fighting cyborg from a 1980s action film based in Detroit has been put together and is ready to head to back to the Motor City. [...]

The fundraising effort to build the monument raised $67,436 through 2,718 backers about two years ago. So far, that funding has been enough to cover the cost of the monument's construction, though organizers have not ruled out the need for an additional round of fundraising or a corporate partnership as the project moves further along.

The effort to build a Robocop statue in Detroit began in 2011 when a Massachusetts resident posted a Twitter message to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, saying that "Philadelphia has a statue of Rocky & Robocop would kick Rocky's butt. He's a GREAT ambassador for Detroit."

Mayor Bing responded to the Tweet by saying, "There are not any plans to erect a statue to Robocop. Thank you for the suggestion."

The Chimera

Let's see… this chimera is made up of a combination lion and tiger with pistons and red wings. You guessed it: Detroit! There are people in the city who pass by every day and don't realize The Chimera represents the city's sports teams (you can find more city symbolism if you look closely). The largest mural in Michigan is being spray-painted by Kobie Solomon, with the support of Detroit Harmonie, on the Russell Building, which houses many art studios and vendors. If you pass through on I-75, keep an eye out for the Chimera! Link

World's Smallest Movie is Made With Atoms

IBM researchers have created the world's smallest movie: it's literally made with atoms!

The ability to move single atoms — the smallest particles of any element in the universe — is crucial to IBM's research in the field of atomic memory. But even nanophysicists need to have a little fun. In that spirit, IBM researchers used a scanning tunneling microscope to move thousands of carbon monoxide molecules (two atoms stacked on top of each other), all in pursuit of making a movie so small it can be seen only when you magnify it 100 million times. A movie made with atoms.

Giant Inflatable Poo

Photo: Nicholas Tse/M+/West Kowloon Cultural District Authority

Encountering a pile of poo in the grass during your morning walk is annoying, but encountering a GIANT pile of inflatable poo invokes a completely different emotion.

For this art exhibit at the West Kowloon Cultural District Park, Hong Kong, American sculptor Paul McCarthy created a piece of art that's not crappy at all! If it were a competition, I'm sure he'd come out as number two. Poo-lchritudinous!

View the giant inflatable poo, titled "Complex Pile" over at designboom (as well as other neat inflatable art like a giant roast pork, cockroach, and more): Link
