The Coyote Vest

A new type of armor is on the market to protect small dogs from coyotes, hawks, big dogs, and other predators. Paul and Pamela Mott developed the Coyote Vest after their dog Buffy was killed by a coyote.

He and his wife worked through a few designs that ended with the CoyoteVest. It has plastic spikes around the collar, spikes down the length of the torso and long plastic quills shooting up along the center from the neck to the rump.

Mott said it would deter any animal from biting into his dogs.

"I just want to save my dogs, and then I realized maybe this invention can save someone else's dog," he said.

There is also an accessory that can be activated by remote to deliver an electric shock. You have to wonder what canines think about the look. Read more about the Mott's business in this news story.  -via Arbroath

Today Will Not Be Fantastic

That’s a depressing attitude to start the say with, and he was wrong anyway. Today will turn out to be fantastic, even if you don’t run into any dragons or orcs or witches. It will be fantastic because of what you make of it. This comic is from Lunarbaboon.

Supercut Of Actor Playing Every Ethnicity Hollywood Has Asked Him To Play

Hollywood has a tradition of casting white actors to play nonwhite roles, commonly referred to as "whitewashing", and despite the backlash they receive every time they "whitewash" a role movie studios keep racially miscasting roles.

But maybe they should call it "racewashing" since Hollywood filmmakers also like to cast ethnic people as different races, and actors who are trying to make it big in the biz need to be prepared to play anyone from anywhere.

In the video below actor Cliff Curtis proves he's prepared to play any ethnicity Hollywood throws his way.

And despite the fact that he's from New Zealand and of Maori descent he's been asked to play practically every race in the book during his illustrious career as a supporting actor.

(Video Link)

Slate's June Thomas sat down with Cliff Curtis to discuss Hollywood's racial casting craziness, asking Cliff What It's Like To Play Every Ethnicity Hollywood Throws Your Way, from which one bit of wisdom really stood out:

“I take the responsibility of playing another ethnicity very, very seriously,” he says, “and I promise myself and those people that I will represent them with as much dignity and integrity as I can muster. I’m not fooling around. I don’t want to make a fool of that cultural heritage. I represent them as I would represent my own.”

Couple Buys A Hoarder's House And Turns It Into Their Dream Home

When people hunt down a great new home to call their own they usually just have to do some straightforward renovations and repairs to make it livable, turning it into the

But where does a new homeowner begin when they're renovating a hoarder's house?

Sue and John Fogwell knew they'd have their work cut out for them when they bought an old ivy covered house in Philadelphia's Main Line neighborhood, since the hoarder owner had left all of his stuff behind when he moved out four years earlier.

"The first thing we saw was floor-to-ceiling containers that would usually be in a garage to hold nuts and bolts," Sue says. Next to that, endless piles of cassettes, tapes, magazines, and more. "It was just wild. Every inch of space was covered."

Luckily, the man wasn't a heap of trash kind of hoarder, but the man's "collection" was so massive it couldn't be contained inside the house:

"I was suffocating in the house, so I excused myself and went outside. That's when I saw it: what I guesstimated to be about 1,000 plastic bins. Full with junk and totally covering the backyard." Every fencepost had a spotlight, so Bill could keep an eye on his bins at night. There was a (working!) phone attached to a tree and wires hanging everywhere.

It took them nine months to clean out the house, but here's the kicker- the owner who had amassed the hoard had to watch over the entire process, making the clutter the least of their problems.

Biker Picks Up Abused Dog Off The Road and 'Cycles Him to Safety

Brandon Turnbow and the dog he rescued from a life of abuse

Brandon Turnbow, a singer/songwriter from Burleson, Texas, was riding his motorcycle en route to his father's house one day when he witnessed a terrible sight. He noticed a blue SUV that was pulled over, and saw a man in the SUV who looked like he was hitting something, yet the target of the violence was out of Turnbow's sight just then. Turnbow continues the story,

"The opposite side passenger door flies open and the man knocks this little white dog up into the air and onto his back in the ditch. I was in shock at that point seeing this little harmless dog on his back in convulsions from the blow…

So I go straight to the place where the dog was and find the dog standing about two feet from the highway where the vehicles were passing. Im scared he is going to dart out and get hit but he doesnt thank God. I jump off my bike and just kneel down beside him and start talking to him. He slowly steps closer shaking like crazy and his breathing was very heavy. I take a chance and just fold my body over him to see if he will bite or trust me. He then just lays his body into me shaking so I just stand up with him in my arms and sit him on the bike seat.”

The SUV driver sped away before Turnbow turned around and was able to reach the scene. But now the dog, whom he calls Mr. Davidson, is in good, caring hands. A look at the smile on the dog's face in the picture below says it all.

Ripley The Toucan Thinks She's A Lap Dog

I will be the first to admit that my knowledge of toucans is largely based on Toucan Sam from the Fruit Loops commercials and that little plaque in front of their cage at the zoo that tells you where they're from and what they eat.

But despite my ignorance on the subject I don't think I've ever heard of toucans being particularly cuddly birds before I saw this video starring Ripley the toucan, who seems to think he's a lap dog rather than a long billed bird.

Ripley's proud owners love sharing their silly bird with the world via the official Ripley the Toucan Facebook page and of course by sharing videos of Ripley's odd behavior on her YouTube channel.

Cat Survives Two Months Trapped in Futon

Moosie the cat was always a survivor. He was rescued from a wall at three weeks of age after his mother died. Two years later, his family, Kymberly and Jesse Chelf, moved from El Paso, Texas, to Fairbanks, Alaska -and that’s when he went missing.

The family searched for their cat everywhere they could think, but came up empty time after time. They stayed in Texas for three days after the movers took their things. Several times each day they returned to the home and searched again.

At first they thought he may have jumped into one of the moving boxes, but all the boxes had been packed and sealed before he went missing. Only the furniture had been left unpacked for the loaders.

“We just assumed he had run away, which was very unlike Moosie,” Kymberly said. “He’s just a very loyal, loving cat.”

They put out the word to all their friends and neighbors. They activated his microchip in case anyone found him and reluctantly left.

The Chelfs’ furniture arrived in Fairbanks two months later, and when the movers had a futon halfway up the stairs, Moosie popped out of the mattress! Moosie was taken to Mount McKinley Animal Hospital, where veterinarians battled his dehydration and nursed him back to health. You can follow Moosie’s progress at his Facebook page. -via Arbroath

Confessions Of A Hollywood Movie Extra

Hollywood movie magic seems way more magical when you don't know all the behind-the-scenes secrets, but with all the DVD extras and leaked footage floating around that magic is starting to lose its sparkle.

And yet, even with all that access to behind the scenes information, nobody can make movie magic fizzle quite like an extra.

They’re the unknown faces who fill in the scene so the main talent doesn’t get lonely, the aspiring actors and average joes who see all kinds of stuff on film sets we don't get to see on the DVD.

Extras get to see it all without the fame and fortune, so there's nothing stopping them from spilling the beans, but the revelations found in 21 Secrets Film Extras Will Never Tell You aren't scandalous.

In fact, contributor "Emerald Jones" actually makes the whole movie extra gig seem way more mundane than you'd expect, albeit mundane with a side of Johnny Depp.

Don the Border Collie Takes off on Tractor Ride, Crosses Busy Highway

Whoever says farm life is uneventful hasn't hung out with Don the Border Collie, who lives on a farm in Scotland with his human Tom Hamilton. Don had a wild adventure this morning, starting when he was riding on a mini tractor with Hamilton, who left it to tend to a lamb headed in the wrong direction.

Don hit the dashboard controls of the tractor and took off, crashing through a fence and cruising across one half of a busy highway before stopping in a grassy median. The photo of Don's joy ride, above, was captured by Traffic Scotland. Don was fine after his solo tractor race. Unsurprisingly, due to the characteristics of his breed, witnesses said Don remained calm.
