Please make the contest user friendly enough so someone like myself, who works as a contractor, can win! I am only online every few days, NOT heavily socially networked, and like a good old fashioned pull-back-the-sleeves-and-come-up-with-a-solution challenge; oh to have a solid chance on winning this! I would love to move off my IBM T series laptop.... especially while enjoying a cold beer & Neatorama on an iPad.

I read this book 15 years ago, and the story is incredible, considering all they endured. To me, there is/was no point in fabricating a story like this- even the part with the yetis. People have done really amazing feats, and have had experiences that are well beyond what we can today accept, in this technologically connected world. My father lived through WW 2 as a Greek guerrilla, and the storied I have heard from hime & his brothers match the hardships this author went through.
After reading the part about the yeti's and the way it was written, it was just written as a passing note in the story as a whole, not a focused blown out of proportion hey-can-you-believe-what-I-saw!?!?! thing. Animals appear & disappear regularly on this planet- why not another type of humanoid? It may be smart enough to know its' survival depends upon homo sapien interaction?

Ditto what embilbie experienced- I cried on the boat out in Milford Sound- its' beauty is truly amazing. I have been to 4 continents, 25 countries and all the states in the US, and am an avid outdoors enthusiast, and I have never reacted to anything quite like I did there. Haunting, and VERY real. Always think of going back.

Great pictures- they easily inspire travel to see them, Some of the locations are on Indian reservations in the southwest, and are off limits to climbers. Nonetheless, all beautiful summits that have all been climbed and enjoyed!

My postings were to show again how over-consumptive we can be. I hope people can figure out how this theoretical example plays in their own lives. Don't waste time beating it to a pulp.

Fuck posting.

Hey Sparks-

Just checking how people responded, since I have posted only a few comments on anything on ANY website. I was motivated (and had a few free minutes) to give some MEANINGFUL information to help further peoples connection between how they live and the breaking down of our ecological, economic, and social systems.
I build non-toxic and deep green residential homes for a living, and am the director for regional green building conferences. So I guess I am a wierdo, because I know that my choices and actions on this planet make a difference. How do you spend your day?>........
If this is the quality of interaction that Neatorama readers are capable of, we're hosed.

It's important to remember that buying more than one needs just because of perceived or actual value is more of a resource strain on this planet. If 25,000 people a day bought the 1 gallon from Walmart when all they needed for 4 days supply was a 1/2 gallon, then that would be 12,500 gallons thrown out in the end. If that cycle repeats itself with all 25,000 people all year (approx 90 times), then it is approx 1,125,000 gallons. Approximating, this is about 4 semi truck loads.
Remember- it is pulled from extra cows out in more managed fields being maintained, fed, injected (more pharmaceutical use), etc. and more factory time producing, energy(petroleum) for heating to homogenize, plastic for packaging, gas and truck and road maintenance for shipping, refrigerator space for storing, and heavier strain on recycling/landfill services. Look at all the extra emissions/resource use involved in over-purchasing.
Now translate this to EVERYTHING that is bought/ consumed in a year of one's life. A seemingly insignificant buying decision has actually much larger consequences than we notice in our day to day living.

Some can say that this is how liberty / freedom dies...

For me liberty and freedom was dying the last 8 years, and honestly, a couple decades before that as well. Perception of the world around us is an interesting study, especially when our country is so often heavily divided in our support for one leader or another.

Now let us, as a country that has people who feel strongly one way or the other for various issues and leaders band together and address the state of the environment as the most important focus. If the delicate ecological balance of this planet is irrevocably altered, it is possible for this planet to not be able to sustain human life.

I would have been a Bush supporter if he chose to address this issue at all, and out of the 2 candidates, Obama got my vote- I feel he may be the more capable and driven to actually address this all encompassing issue.
