When the United States landed two Viking space probes on the surface of the Mars in July and September 1976, scientist hoped to end a century of speculation. The probes had one major task: to search for life…While no one expected to find the bug-eyed monsters of science fiction, many scientists did believe that the planet had to support some form of life, if only of a primitive kind.
