The Power of Sleep: Shakespeare Was Probably Right
‘Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care, The death of each day’s life, sore labor’s  bath, Balm of hurt minds, great nature’s second course, Chief nourisher in life's feast.’

With these words, spoken by the murderer-king Macbeth, William Shakespeare voiced a view taken up by poets and philosophers through the centuries: sleep is good for you. Accepted as commonplace for so long, it is probably taken for granted. However, only recently has medical science started to investigate thoroughly the restorative powers of sleep.
