With such a patron saint, it is not surprisingly that Winchester, one of Britain’s finest cathedrals, should become a victim of serious flooding. But the way in which the cathedral was saved is unique.
In 1906 the authorities decided that a revolutionary approach was needed to solve the problem: they recruited the services of William Walker, an experienced deep-sea diver. For nearly six years visitors were greeted with the incongruous sight of a man working in the cathedral wearing a diving suit.
