redditor TheHerferd made this excellent watermelon carving. Using a potato peeler and a bird’s beaked paring knife, he completed the project in under an hour.

What better way to quench your summer thirst than with Optimus Prime? I’d feel bad digging in, though. There doesn’t seem to be much info about the creator of this food art, so if it’s you, step up and own your awesomeness!

No, it’s not ‘shopped. You’re looking at the Pepquino melon, which looks very much like a micro watermelon (but tastes like a cucumber instead):
While they might look genetically-engineered, Pepquinos come from an ancient wild plant in South America, and are 100% natural. They are just 3-cm-long and 2 cm in diameter, but apart from their size, they look just like regular watermelons. But only on the outside, because once sliced, the juicy green flesh of a cucumber is revealed. They also have the crisp fresh taste of cucumbers and usually served in luxury restaurants, as appetizers, in summer salads, stir fried and even as a sorbet.
The rare Pepquinos were discovered and brought to Europe in 1987, by a Dutch company that later began producing them and selling seeds. They’ve only recently started cultivating them in the US and Asia, but their popularity in foodie communities is growing rapidly.

Riding around in this adorable melonmobile would make me feel like Cinderella in her pumpkin coach. I hope it’s a seedless variety so pit stops wouldn’t be required.
Add this to the long list of things the next generation won’t know: watermelon has seeds.
Jane Black of The Washington Post writes how seedless watermelon is replacing old-school ones in the grocery stores:
According to the National Watermelon Promotion Board, only 16 percent of watermelons sold in grocery stores have seeds, down from 42 percent in 2003. In California and the mid-South, home to the country’s biggest watermelon farms, the latest figures are 8 and 13 percent, respectively. The numbers seem destined to tumble. Recently developed hybrids do not need seeded melons for pollination – more on that later – which liberates farmers from growing melons with spit-worthy seeds.
The iconic, black-studded watermelon wedge appears destined to become a slice of vanished Americana. If that sounds alarmist, try to remember the last time you had to spit out a grape seed.
Did you do anything productive over the past month? I ask because YouTube user JoshuasCorner blew up 5 watermelons with powerful electrical discharges. How many did you explode?

Vid Nikolic posted a time-lapse video of himself carving a watermelon. The design starts out simple and builds into an impressively intricate display. The carving took about 40 minutes to complete.

People do some strange things when they have time to kill. Making the Death Star out of a cantaloupe or watermelon is one of the cooler (but still ever so slightly strange) things.
You were told as a child to never play with your food but, to be frank, sometimes when a cool idea suddenly hits, the temptation is just too strong. So, you take a watermelon. You just can’t help noticing that it already kinda looks like the Death Star. It doesn’t look quite right on a plate, though. Time to experiment.

The picture above sure looks like a minuscule watermelon doesn’t it? Just imagine biting into it, skin and all, to discover it is entirely tomato-y though. That’s because the adorable creation is actually made from a green zebra tomato shell filled with tomato gel and topped with black sesame seeds. It might not be the most productive way to spend your time, but the effect is certainly fascinating.
